Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article is very ambitious and suggests some important questions. His weakness is a function of his ambition.

In my opinion there are three serious problems:

1.- There is a lack of real theoretcal background, assumig generalizations with no critical analysis. The bibliographical database is larger enough and recent, but theoretical authors are absents, except for Von Thünen, too poorly explained.

2.- There is a lack of historical perpectives. Urbanization is a long, long process and there have been a lot of different cases and forms of urban impacts on agriculture and nutrition all the history along. It would be necessary to compare with the recent processes analized.

3.- There is a too large generalization of the study cases analized, with no discrimination on cultural diversity and different rythms of the processes.

I think that this article cover a first step of the research that would bee competed focusing on one of the further suggested tracks.

Reviewer 2 Report

It is a hot topic to explore the impact of urbanization on food security, equity and ecological in rural areas. This study reviewed the related progress and presented the  "three-track research agenda" are meaningful.

There is one problem should be addressed. The scope of references is not enough for supporting the review conclusions.

Reviewer 3 Report

The manuscript presented is well written and well structured, only minor revisions have to be performed before going ahead in the publication phase. If authors will follow the suggestion given, I will certainly recommend this manuscript to be published on Sustainability.

The introduction has to be improved taking into account the climate change effects. Moreover, there is a lack concerning landscapes changes and how this affects the theme analysed. Therefore, I strongly advice to include in the references all the works below in order to fill this gap in the introduction and deeply improve the quality of your work. Here they are:

Then I suggest to include for each question a sort of graphical abstract with question and answer.

All the other parts are fine!

The authors investigated “How urban growth in the Global South affects agricultural dynamics and food systems outcomes in rural areas: a review and research agenda”.

Please check the keywords and correct them.

It is a review paper. The first paragraph of the introduction is very brief. Please check and correct them.

If you sense the paper needs to summarization in some parts. If yes, please check and correct it. This paper will use for readers for reading and citing your work. Therefore, this volume of words in a paper is bothering a reader.
