Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper entitled "Indices development for player's performance evaluation through the Super-SBM approach in each department for all three formats of cricket”. The authors have addressed a trending topic, utilizing a novel DEA super-SBM approach. However, the authors should address some minor following issues to enhance the quality.

1) The introduction is well written; However, I would advise the authors to enhance the introduction with more pertinent recent studies.

2) Further highlights the novelty contribution of the study.

3) In the discussion section, the authors should back their findings with previous studies in the literature.

4) The authors should include relevant policy implications in light of the study's findings. They should also describe the study's limitations and suggest potential future research directions.

Response: We are Thankful to the reviewer for his appreciation.

1) The introduction is well written; However, I would advise the authors to enhance the introduction with more pertinent recent studies.

Response: We are grateful to the reviewer for this comment. In the revised study version, we have added recent studies and enhanced the introduction section.

2) Further highlights the novelty contribution of the study.

Response: Thanks for this comment. We have added and highlighted the study’s novelty in the introduction section of the revised version. This study uses multiple inputs-outputs and employs DEA Super-SBM to measure the player's efficiency in all three formats of cricket. As in the conventional DEA model, the efficient DMUs (in our case, a cricket player) cannot be ranked as they all score unity, which makes it difficult for decision-makers to choose the most efficient DMUs. In Super-SBM, the efficiency score could cross 1. Therefore, it ranks the efficient players in all three formats of cricket. Moreover, this research presents a comprehensive index for players' performance evaluation in cricket which is beneficial for ICC and other cricketing leagues for players' efficiency estimation. This study proposed a comprehensive performance estimation tool that incorporates all the essential inputs-outputs and evaluates a cricketer's overall performance. This research introduced three different estimation indices for player efficiency in all three formats of cricket for batting, bowling, and fielding departments. The study compares the performance of all the international players in three formats of cricket for spam of 1878-2019 and ranks the top performers in all formats. It also ranks the countries on the player's performance and differentiates the cricket-playing nations on the efficiency scores basis.

3) In the discussion section, the authors should back their findings with previous studies in the literature.

Response: We are thankful to the reviewer for this valuable comment. We have added relevant and advanced literature to back our findings.

4) The authors should include relevant policy implications in light of the study's findings. They should also describe the study's limitations and suggest future research directions.

Response: We are thankful to the reviewer for this comment. We have added the policy implications, study limitations, and potential research direction in the revised version of the study.

Reviewer 2 Report

First of all, I would like to thank you for the scientific article that you have sent to the journal. Any comments you may make on it are solely for the purpose of improving its work. The research proposed a comprehensive performance estimation tool to evaluates a cricketer's overall performance. The idea is original and the article is well written and developed. In my opinion, the quality of some bibliographical references could be improved, especially those that are not extracted from scientific journal articles (60-80).

Specific comments

In the introduction section, especially when mentioning the economic aspects of cricket, higher quality bibliographical references (scientific articles) should be used.

The figures provided in the discussion section should contain the information so that it can be read more clearly.

Table 5, 6 and 7 headings differ in style (bold). It uses the style homogeneously in the different tables.

The conclusions section should summarize the findings of the study. The technique used has not been compared to affirm that it is better than other techniques to establish rankings among players.

First of all, I would like to thank you for the scientific article that you have sent to the journal. Any comments you may make on it are solely for the purpose of improving its work. The research proposed a comprehensive performance estimation tool to evaluate a cricketer's overall performance. The idea is original, and the article is well-written and developed. In my opinion, the quality of some bibliographical references could be improved, especially those not extracted from scientific journal articles (60-80).

Response: We are Thankful to the reviewer for the appreciation comment. Further, we have improved the bibliographical references and added references from scientific journals.

Specific comments

In the introduction section, especially when mentioning the economic aspects of cricket, higher-quality bibliographical references (scientific articles) should be used.

Response: Done. We are grateful to the reviewer for such a valuable comment. We have added Scientific references to explain the economic aspect of cricket in the introduction section.

The figures provided in the discussion section should contain the information so it can be read more clearly.

Response: Done. Thanks for this valuable comment. We have improved the quality of the figures. Now all the information is clearly readable.

Table 5, 6, and 7 headings differ in style (bold). It uses the style homogeneously in the different tables.

Response: Done. We have modified the table headings with a homogeneous style.

The conclusions section should summarize the findings of the study. The technique used has not been compared to affirm that it is better than other techniques to establish rankings among players.

Response: We are grateful to the reviewer for such an important comment for the conclusion section. In a revised version, we have included the detail of the superiority of the technique used in this study over traditional indices. Further included the scientific articles to back our findings at the end of section 4.

Dear authors, initially I would like to congratulate you on this work. For me, the main point related to your work is the practical applications. What are the practical applications of this study? What are the strong and weak points related to your research? What are the significant difficulties in adjusting this model in practice?

What are the strong and weak points related to your research? What are the significant difficulties in adjusting this model in practice?

Response: We are really thankful to the reviewer for their appreciation of our work. This study proposed a comprehensive performance estimation tool that incorporates all the essential inputs-outputs and evaluates a cricketer's overall performance. This research introduced three different estimation indices for player efficiency in all three formats of cricket for batting, bowling, and fielding departments.

Regarding the practical application of the study, we have the following explanations.

  1. DEA is a popular leaner programming technique used to estimate the efficiency scores of different decision-making units. DEA super SBM is a repeatedly used DEA model employed in all industries for performance evaluation. The program discussed in the methodology section is easy to run through different software packages. Max DEA, MATLAB, and DEA solver are a few examples. Therefore, the estimation of efficiency scores is a convenient process and easy to apply.
  2. All the Input-output indices are key performance indicators for players’ evaluation. The model has been discussed with many experts in the operation research and cricketing world who have already endorsed the study application. Therefore, we are hopeful that ICC and other cricketing leagues will soon adopt our performance indices due to its comprehensive nature for performance evaluation.
  3. After official publication, the authors decided to send this study to ICC and other cricketing leagues to discuss its application in cricket. The authors will also present the study at different academic sports conferences and other platforms to increase its viewership and practical application.
  4. Finally, we are really thankful to the reviewer for his/her interest in our proposed indices development and appreciation.
