Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

It is a pleasure to review this manuscript. Here is my review.

1. The keywords are suggested to be within 5 words.

2. Line 47. Rather state that this result is derived from Chua, Lee, & Han, 2017; Li, et al., 2008; Liu, et al., 2012). Searching journal databases reveals many studies on the difference between first-time and repeat visitors. In addition, it is not very appropriate for Rather to cite the 2012 literature to make such a conclusion. Please search the journal database to confirm the correctness of this sentence.

3. From the research hypothesis, it is found that there are three DVs in this manuscript, they are "Tourists' affective responses", "satisfaction" and "behavioral intentions". Is there a theoretical basis to show that tourists' experiential perceptions contain these three variables? Show "tourists' gender is the most influential factor in perceived experiential quality" in the abstract. But research hypothesis 1 shows that "tourists' affective responses differ according to tourists' gender". Which one is DV? And, "behavioral" is misspelled.

4. Line 203. K-S test is to verify whether the data is normally distributed by the difference between the observed value and the probability function of normal distribution.

5. Line 216. The K-W test is used to test whether the medians of multiple mothers are equal. I don’t know what the author’s intention uses K-W to test age and education level.

6. Tables 4 to 10. The author tests each item of the questionnaire. These tests are not relevant to the research topic of this manuscript. And the research hypothesis cannot be answered using this kind of analysis. The mean and standard deviation of each item is calculated in Table 4. Why not use ANOVA?

Finally, this study escaped from the research topic. All the tests are not related to the research topic. In addition, there are three DVs in this manuscript. It makes this study unfocused.

Dear Editor,

In the attached document we re-submit the article entitled “THE ROLE OF DEMOGRAPHICS AND PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN TOURISTS’ EXPERIENTIAL PERCEPTIONS” developed by researchers of the Universidad de Extremadura in Spain. First, we appreciate all the suggestions provided to improve the quality of our research. Following the recommendations, in the tables presented bellow we specify the changes that we have included in the manuscript. These changes made have been highlighted with green letters.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear authors,

thank you for opportunity to review your paper. Tourism experience is very interesting topic and I believe that your results are just a part of one bigger project. Theoretical background is well described. However I would like that you better explain research design in section 3 Material and Methods. You mention that the questionnaire was available in five languages and it was distributed via Facebook. However it is unclear which set of tourism experiences are chosen and why. Please better explain dissemination of the questionnaire. It would be interesting to know national structure of your respondents. Was it necessary to have questionnaire in 5 languages available? When is the research conducted?

Another issue that I would like to point out is regarding the analysis of the results. You mention in your paper that the study variables show a non-normal distribution. For the variables age and education you used Kruskal-Wallis test, but for gender, previous visits to destination, previous participation in the experience and previous participation in similar experience you used independent sample t-test. Could you justified why you have chosen to use t-test and no Mann-Whitney U-test as non-parametric alternative?

In results you are constantly saying e.g. “..gender of tourists significantly influence perceived experiential quality…”. In this study you did not test the influence of demographic and prior experience variables on experiential quality, satisfaction and behavioural intentions; you tested are there differences in responses according to chosen variables.

Wish you all the best and hope that I will receive very soon revised version of your paper.

The authors examined the difference of the affective responses, satisfaction and behavioral intentions by some demographic information and previous experiences. However, it was difficult to find sufficient contribution of this article to the existing body of knowledge in tourism. Please refer to the following opinions as follows.

1) Overall, the justification and importance of this study should be strongly addressed in the entire manuscript. A simple comparison of some outcome variables by the selective demographic factors and previous experiences does not seem to contribute much to the existing literature.

2)  Authors would need to address why they selected the three chosen demographic factors and the three chosen travel-related variables (i.e., experiential quality, satisfaction, and intention) out of many other variables.

3) The data collection process needs to be stated in detail. The study population and context were not fully explained either.

4) A forementioned points resulted in the weak conclusion and vague implications, which is also related to a lack of merit of this study. The authors would need to redesign the study to meaningfully fill the gap in the existing literature and to maximize its contribution to the body of knowledge in tourism, and improve the logic and justification of this study.

The topic is very interesting and the research model reveals some interesting insights. Here are some suggestions on how to improve the paper:

The introduction is well-written and makes a good introduction to the topics. The authors should just add 1-2 sentences to emphasize the research gap and novelty of the research (as they point out that demographics were studied before in relation to experience and behavior).

The methodology should be restructured in more a meaningful way: Participants (or study sample), Instrument, Procedure and Data analysis. The majority of data is already there, just needs to have a clear structure.

It is not clear why The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used for the variables age and educational level and the t-test for gender. The Independent sample t-test is a parametric test and the Kruskal-Wallis test is non-parametric. So if there is no normal distribution of data, only non-parametric techniques should be used.

A review of a revised version of this manuscript. From the research hypothesis, it is found that there are three DVs in this manuscript, they are "Tourists' affective responses", "satisfaction" and "behavioral intentions". The author tests each item of the questionnaire. These tests are not relevant to the research topic of this manuscript. And the research hypothesis cannot be answered using this kind of analysis. This method of analysis is wrong. According to the central limit theorem. When the number of samples is greater than or equal to 30, the sampling distribution of the sample mean approaches the normal distribution. It is not necessary to test whether the distribution is normal distribution. This manuscript's research methodology has serious problems.
