Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript addresses using several surveying tools for monitoring dams or in the future various structures. The article validated the method through a case study for a dam which is considered something good, nevertheless, the manuscript is missing several details about the topography and the material or soil characterization that should be addressed by the practitioners and the researchers.

Here are some major and minor comments

Line 98- 99 states that “meter-deep diaphragm wall in the alluvial foundation and a single-row grout curtain in the lava and dolomite foundations.” Do the authors mean that the foundations were set on movable strata of soil? In other words is it attractive to volcanic action as stated (Lava).

Line 102: ‘m’ should be written ‘meters’

Also, the Sub and superscript should be reviewed along the manuscript, and the capital and small letters of units as in “Km” should be “km”.

Lines 107 to 135: The authors should be clear is the water seepage a result of erosion or due to the fault or crevice in the strata of soil? Is there any profile of the sol strata that can identify the situation of soil layers?

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The primary inquiry of the study is how to efficiently track the structural behavior of Iran's Lar Dam in order to pinpoint potential collapse risks. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the relative efficacy of two monitoring methods: terrestrial surveying networks and interferometric synthetic aperture radars (InSAR). The study aims to evaluate the stability of the dam and ascertain its displacement rates by examining data gathered from both techniques over time. The ultimate objective is to avoid disastrous occurrences such as dam breakdowns and to create safety management strategies for hydraulic facilities that are predicated on precise monitoring and stability evaluation.

By contrasting the efficiency of InSAR and terrestrial surveying network techniques in monitoring dam displacements, the study fills a specific research gap. This kind of comparative study is crucial for figuring out the benefits and drawbacks of various monitoring strategies and for deciding which methodology is best for evaluating dam stability under particular circumstances. In addition, the study concentrates on Iran's Lar Dam, offering important perspectives on dam safety concerns within a particular geographic setting. The research adds to a better knowledge of dam behavior and aids in the creation of safer management strategies for hydraulic facilities by examining the displacement rates of this specific dam and identifying potential failure hazards.

The manuscript is mostly clear, with good structural design.

Figures, schematic are easy to interpret and understand.

The references are appropriate, but the literature review should be carried out continuously.

Paper title: Deformation risk assessment of the Lar Dam: monitoring the stability condition

The observations are:

1) Introduction

The introduction needs improvement.

The approach doesn´t explore the vulnerability factors associated with hydrological and geological dam risk.

2) Figure 1

The Lar Dam location is confusing.

(A) and (b) are sentinel images and (c) a geological map. The suggestion is a correct location figure without the sentinel images (only vector) and the associated geological map.

3) The authors need to show a geometric illustration of Lar Dam. For the reader, it is impossible to understand figures 2 to 5 without this prior representation.

4) Figure 9

Present Figure 9 without the transparency effect (without the sentinel image).

The authors could use the vector representation applied in Figure 6b as a reference.

5) Figure 10

The illustrations do not promote understanding.

6) Figure 11

The axes information is not readable.

The Figure could present only TerraSAR-X evolution.

In another figure, the Sentinel-1 images comparison only in the 2013 to 2019 time series.

7) Discussion

Table 5 shows the vertical displacements. The discussion could present the inducing factors and the accuracy method in detecting their response.

Lines 344 to 352 have some explanation.

8) The authors must add a conclusion.

The paper is more appropriate to Remote Sensing than Sustainability. The editors can evaluate the migration. But before publishing, the information must become more understandable to the reader.
