How Does Artificial Intelligence Impact Green Development? Evidence from China
Round 1

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThis paper has a novel theme and a reasonable overall design, but there are still some issues that need improvement:
1. In the introduction, it is necessary to explain the marginal contribution of this article, that is, what are the innovative points compared with relevant research?
2.The research conclusions obtained in this article need to be thoroughly discussed and compared with existing relevant research findings.
3. it was found that the author overlooked some recent related studies, such as
Does industrial robot application promote green technology innovation in the manufacturing industry?[J]. Technological Forecasting and Social Change, 2022, 183: 121893.
Carbon emission reduction effects of industrial robot applications: Heterogeneity characteristics and influencing mechanisms[J]. Technology in Society, 2022, 70: 102034.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsA fundamental review is required. The concepts are worthy and important in the field, but more rigor is required.
1. Abstract: the abstract is not concise. The methods employed are not clear from the abstract. The key results are not well articulated. The importance of the study is still sort of fuzzy.
It is recommended that the abstract be rewritten to more succinctly highlight the importance of the study, key gaps, methods and main findings.
2. Introduction: The problem is not sufficiently addressed in the introduction to rationalize the need for the paper. The introduction needs to be rewritten to infuse a justification.
Could you provide further background and context on the acronym green development referred to as"(GE)"? It it hard to associate GE and green development. A revision of the term is recommended.
Fig 1 should be improved.
3. Literature review: The first sentence of the literature section makes a statement without substantiating it with appropriate references.
The second sentence in the literature section is also not substantiated with relevant references.
"Green development" is not sufficiently defined and explained in the literature section.
There are several acronyms and a list of abbreviations is recommended.
Section 2.3 seems too broad without clarity on what it seems to achieve. The point of the subsection is not clearly articulated.
4. Mechanistic analysis: Again, the first statement in section 3.1 lacks justification and the choice of words is declarative without appropriate citations.
section 3 of the paper has few references, but is written as if it were the results of research or scientific theories. This section appears before the actual analysis so it is not clear what the basis for the claims are.
5. Materials and methods: why was the model by Ren et al and Hao et al adopted? What are the drawbacks of the model? What makes it more suitable for the study? What other models could have been adopted?
6. What were the likely author biases?

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThank you very much for the opportunity to review the publication "How Does Artificial Intelligence Impact Green Development? Evidence from China." Measuring the contribution of artificial intelligence (AI) to the progress of green development (GE) is a timely and important issue. Both AI and GE are also an internationally recognized challenge that has received considerable attention in the academic literature. The study introduces a broad research framework (Figure 1) that describes the context of both AI and GE topics and their relationship. The methodology is well designed and carefully described. The results of the study are interesting and inspire further research (in other countries). I recommend this article for publication.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsComments:
Major issues:
1. The manuscript's background does not establish a unique research gap or question. The connection between AI and green development, especially in the Chinese context, has been explored previously, reducing the novelty of this study.
2. The literature review is insufficiently critical and integrative. It fails to thoroughly compare and contrast existing studies, lacking depth in synthesizing the current understanding of AI’s role in green development.
3. The study's theoretical contributions are unclear. It does not significantly extend existing theories or models about AI's impact on green development, thereby limiting its academic value.
4. The methodology appears conventional and lacks innovation. The choice of models and analysis techniques is not adequately justified, raising questions about the robustness and uniqueness of the approach.
5. The results are presented without sufficient critical analysis or discussion of their implications. There is a lack of in-depth exploration into how the findings advance our understanding of AI's role in green development.
6. The discussion section does not adequately link the findings to broader socio-economic or environmental contexts. It misses opportunities to discuss how this research could influence policy or practical applications in China or globally.
7. The conclusions are somewhat generic and do not offer significant insights. Additionally, the manuscript lacks a clear articulation of potential avenues for future research, which is crucial for advancing the academic discourse in this area.
Minor issues:
1. How does this paper embody sustainability?
2. The variables in this paper are presented in a table.
3. The basis of variable selection and the processing method of variables should be clearly stated.
4. Basic statistical analyses are missing.
5. Tables 3, 5, and 7 should have explanations for all notations.
6. Is the endogeneity problem really solved?
