Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The paper "The effect of electricity generation on the performance of microbial fuel cell for Anammox" investigates the efficiency of denitrification and the efficiency of electricity generation by Anammox AFB-MFC system under different operating conditions. In general, the work is suitable for the subject of the journal and can be considered for publication in the journal Sustainability after revision of the text and responses to comments, which are set out below.

 1. The average anode NRE values range from 31.74 to 39.78% for COD concentrations from 100 to 300 mg/L and seem close in magnitude to draw unambiguous conclusions.  What is the non-linear behavior of the NRE value from COD concentration? Clarify how the calculations were performed and what is the error in determining the nitrogen removal efficiency?

2. Does the different distribution of microbial composition and relative abundance in the anodic region have a decisive effect on the overall system performance?

3. In the microphotographs, Fig. 7, the particle size and scale superscripts need to be enlarged.

4. Rework the references in the ref. lists. Make them uniform and fit the journal requirements

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript is interesting but corrections are needed before publishing

1. Please use the formula editor for equations especially 6, please try to order numbering should be in one row

2. Please add more details about error regression, why it was chosen,

3. Please motivate the methodology you have chosen for research in more detail

4. A table that compares your results with other microbial fuel cells' published data would visualize better your scores

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

1. The length and weight dimensions of each element in the reactor, as well as the powers and pumping capacities of the pumps, should be given.

2. Information should be provided about the lifespan and number of cycles of the fuel cell in question.

3.Although the variations of open circuit voltages for the fuel cell developed in question have been experimentally demonstrated, another factor, short circuit currents or electrical power, has never been mentioned. It would be useful to clarify this issue.

Reviewer 2 Report (New Reviewer)

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors responded very well to my comments. Now it can be published.

This manuscript is a resubmission of an earlier submission. The following is a list of the peer review reports and author responses from that submission.

The list of comments might help to further improve the manuscript:

i)- Abstract section should be written more carefully and comprehensively.

ii)- A comprehensive flowchart should be added to the study.

iii)- The introduction should include more literature reviews. (2022-2023)

iv)- The “Conclusion” section should be reviewed. (more carefully and comprehensively)
