Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Based on the overall population, long-term residence and temporary residence classification, tthe article effectively identifies the indoor thermal comfort needs of tropical urban residents in Haikou City, which is an important reference for sustainable developmentTo further improve the article, the following are suggestions to consider:

1There are redundant symbols on page 3, line 102, and the author is requested to check and correct them.

2Page 6 Table2, the proportion of males and females in the subjects was not equal, and whether this had an impact on the analysis of the association between gender and thermal comfort.

3There are a number of ambiguous points in Figure 7 on page 8, Figure 9 on page 9 and Figure 12 on page 10, which the authors are requested to explain.

4Page 12, line 356, "when MTSV = -0.5-0.5" is objectionable and the author is advised to make the change.

5The article analyses the impact of the design of indoor thermal parameters on the energy consumption of a building, based on which, is it possible to further analyse the impact of the behaviour of the inhabitants on the energy consumption of a building , e.g. DOI: 10.17775/CSEEJPES.2021.04510.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The paper deals with summer indoor air conditioning design parameters in Haikou City. The paper is adequately written and is understandable, though English could be improved. Also, please elaborate more on the statistical methods used in section 2.

Comments to the Author

This paper proposes a field study in Haikou City on indoor thermal perception and comfort. However, there are several points that need to be addressed to improve the quality of the manuscript.

Suggestions to improve the quality of the paper are provided below:

1.     The current literature review on past thermal comfort studies and its application within building controls is not comprehensive enough. Please review the following recent works as a good starting point.

Field study evaluation of thermal adaptation and thermal comfort in a tropical climate

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.buildenv.2023.111043

Personal thermal comfort modelling

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.buildenv.2023.110148

Integration of personal thermal comfort modelling to improve building operations

10.1088/1742-6596/2600/13/132004

2.     The authors should consider summarising their list of contributions and focus on highlighting the areas where this work extends upon the existing studies.

3.     More details should be provided regarding the field study. For instance:

·       Why was the field study conducted in Haikou?

·       How were the 11 buildings selected for this study? Are they representative of the building types in Haikou?

·       How were the 600 subjects selected for this study? Are they representative of the population in Haikou? It would be useful to compare the demographics of the subjects with the demographics of the general population in Haikou to ensure that they are as representative as possible.

·       What is the study period? Does it account for the changes in preferences due to seasonality impact?

·       Were the subjects asked to wear the same type of clothing during the experiment or were they allowed to wear any clothing that makes them feel more comfortable? If it is the second scenario, is the clothing level information recorded in the questionnaire?

4.     The authors should spend some time in the Discussion section to talk about the implications of the findings in this work.

5.     Minor comments:

·       The authors mentioned in Section 2.1 that the annual sunshine duration is between 1500 hours and 2600 hours? Please double check if there are any mistakes in this sentence.

·       Figure 1 is too small to view.

·       There are some spelling and grammatical mistakes in the manuscript. Please review the manuscript thoroughly and correct these mistakes.

·       Figure 7 is a little hard to read since the numbers and the box plot overlap with each other.

1Page 4, line 168, there is a sign problem at the end of the sentence, please fix it.

2The article exists in both "~" and "-" forms, and the author is advised to harmonise.

3The article refers to future research on human thermal comfort in offices, for which DOI: 10.17775/CSEEJPES.2021.04510 is available, analysing in detail the human comfort temperature in offices.
