Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The overall idea of making HSI technology more easily available is very much appreciated, and the paper makes significant contributions. The results are one step on the way, but already useful and demonstrate important progress. New research results can be added to the software stack. Some further information about the software architecture in terms of APIs and how other algorithms can be interfaced would be nice.

Time synchronization issues are mentioned at the start of section 3.1. It would be useful with more information about the technical solution and what accuracies are achieved. This would be important for direct geo-referencing and image registration.

Correction for smile is included, buy keystone is only briefly mentioned as a possibility in section 5.1. Please provide some further information.

Reviewer 2 Report

Aim at lowering the barriers of acquiring hyperspectral images for practitioners, the authors provide an open-source optical design and open-source software platform for the audience. Compared to a published design (ref. [21]), this study has some unique characteristics and good balance in some aspects. The performance of the OpenHSI camera and software was verified by an airborne experiment. This paper is interesting and valuable. I recommend its publication.
