Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper is well-written and well-organized. The existing methodology is well described and the new methodology is adequately developed.

The validation of the proposed method on numerical test is well designed and the application to a real dataset collected in Gansu Province (China),  is interesting and promising in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

The paper can be considered for publication in MDPI

Paper is written in a very clear way. Scientific soundness and interest to the readers are high. But I would like to make a note. I find it strange that there is not references to cross-correlation and wavelet cross-correlation. In scientific topics, these characteristics are relevant and they should be treated in each paper where a correlation has been performed. I suggest these two references:

1) G. Pucciarelli, Wavelet Analysis in Volcanology: The Case of Phlegrean Fields, Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering, vol.A, No.6, pp. 400-407

2) J.C Yoo, T.H Han, Fast-Normalized Cross Correlation, Circuit Systems and Signal Processing, 2009

Author Response

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for your precious comments and advice. Those comments are all valuable and very helpful for revising and improving our paper, as well as the important guiding significance to our researches. We have modified the cited references and added these two references in the introduction part.

The revised sentence is shown as follows:

L37 and L38: Cross-correlation is a common algorithm in the interferometry [7,8].

Thank you again for your suggestions. They are of great significance to our future research work. We look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Yizhe Su & Bin Hu

Reviewer 3 Report

The manuscript proposes a seismic first arrival reconstruction method that has the potential to improve the picking of seismic refraction travel times than the current practice which makes it worthy of publication. Following are some minor comments:

1. L46 and L47 should be one paragraph.

2. In equation 1, why integrating along the shot domain can suppress the noise?

3. The caption of Figure 3 is a little confused.

4. Why only do the travel time difference analysis in the synthetic data example, but not in the field data example?

5. In your proposed method, I assume that variables  and t in equations 9-10 are the key parameters. To ensure the reproducibility of the method, please declare the specific values of these variables.

6. The third paragraph of Introduction introduced the development of the SVI method, I think the reference about the application of SVI is insufficient. Suggested references for citation:

7. L44, reset -> resetting.

8. L62, are -> were.
