A Systematic Approach to Study Complex Ternary Co-Promoter Interactions: Addition of Ir, Li, and Ti to RhMn/SiO2 for Syngas Conversion to Ethanol
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This paper reported a routine methodology for the direct conversion of synthesis gas. The topic is interesting, but the content of this paper is inferior on heterogeneous catalysis. Both of the presentation and scientific quality of the work are low. No clear data validation on RhMn/SiO2 heterogeneous catalysis was reported. There is too much confusing information in the article. The discussion of the materials and methods content is confusing. There are too many language and figure errors in the paper. The English writing should be attention. This manuscript seems to contain many wrong and omitted letters. Figures format seem to be wrong. Therefore, it is not suitable to be published in Catalysts.

This work entitled “A systematic approach to study complex ternary co-promoter interactions: addition of Ir, Li and Ti to RhMn/SiO2 for syngas conversion to ethanol”. It presents a current approach and the results are very interesting both for academic research areas and for industries. It is recommended that this manuscript be published after including and addressing the comments listed below with major corrections.
My comments are:
Authors must organize the manuscript in the journal's profile.
Authors must clearly explain the innovation and importance of their work in the introduction to the manuscript.
The materials and methods section needs to be elaborated, that is, to put the procedures of synthesis, characterization and catalytic tests of the catalysts.
It is suggested that the authors explain the synergistic effects resulting from the complexity of the interactions of the added dopants, that is, Ir, Ti and Li, in the “RhMn/SiO2” catalyst material. Please provide additional information on this important point. XPS study of these materials is highly recommended.
It is suggested that the authors include assessment of additional physicochemical properties, such as textural (BET), structural (XRD) and surface acidity and basicity properties of the catalysts prepared in the revised manuscript.
Authors must justify the value of the work and compare it with similar articles published previously (I suggest a subsection, include a table). Explaining the advantage and heterogeneous applications developed in this work.
It is suggested that the authors include a study of reuse, regeneration and stability of catalysts and include analyzes regarding the composition of the catalyst (ICP-OES) and particle sizes (TEM), textural (BET) and structural (XRD) properties and compare with of fresh catalysts.
Authors must eliminate errors:
In lines 144, 235 “N2 and H2”,
In lines 146, 149, 234 “ml the correct one is mL”.
In lines 457, 500, 502, 510, 545, 556 “Figure 8 is called but is not in the manuscript”.
In line 478 “SI-8” could be added to the manuscript.
In line 496 “presence”
In line 558 “Reference source not found”

This paper describes the effect of promoters. For this study, the addition of Ir, Li, and Ti to RhMn/SiO2 oxides was made and applied to syngas conversion to ethanol. I accept this paper as
1. The conclusions are proved by the results.
2. The content is scientifically sound.
3. The results are properly described and explained.
However, minor revision is required for following
1. The paper requires extensive English editing.
2. There are many typo errors that should be checked and corrected.
