Biodegradation of Different Types of Bioplastics through Composting—A Recent Trend in Green Recycling
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The paper is well written and scientifically important in the field.
I have found only small editorial mistakes, which may be easily corrected by the authors.
(1) However, in my opinion the paper would be more interesting if more space would be dedicated to enzymes and microorganisms.
(2)There are number of papers concerning modern techniques. Please, see for example:
1) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.157017
2) https://rdcu.be/c2KwU
3) 10.2174/1389202921999200525155711
(3) Considering the scope, the paper will comprise more details on enzymes engaged in degradation of mentioned plastics or organisms (not only genus names).

This manuscript can comprehensively review and discuss the biodegradation of bioplastics after extensively reading the literatures. Composting technology in the biodegradation of bioplastics as well as classification of different bioplastics is further discussed. I believe that this review can attract some relevant readers. But the writing of the manuscript needs to be greatly improved. For example, the followings are some deficiencies or errors. There are many such problems, and the reviewer does not list them one by one. The author needs to carefully revise the full text.
1. Page 1, line 34. “Globally, there were 300 million tons of plastics containing petroleum in 2015”. Is there recent data that can be referenced?
2. Page 2, line 46. “a scale of 4 MT”. Does “MT” means million tons? It was not mentioned previous text, and "Mt" was used at line 47. Same problem was happened at Page 3, line 132, “2.2 PHAs based bioplastic. All abbreviations should be noted with their full names when they first appear.
3. Page 2, line 89. “PLA” was not noted with its full name when it first appeared. At line 111, "PLA" was noted as "polylactic acid". However, at line 119, "Polyactides, also known as PLA". An abbreviation in an article can only represent one word or one group of words.
4. Page 2, line 97. “After 47 days of composting, 97-7% of the cellulose mineralized in the lab according to standard composting”. Is "97-7%" correct?
3. Page 6. In Figure 1, the shape of the microorganism in the cartoon at the top right (green) represents bacteria and virus, which cannot represent filamentous fungus. Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium are filamentous fungus.

Dear Authors
The manuscript entitled “Biodegradation of different types of bioplastics through composting a recent trend in the green recycling” has an interesting topic. Due to excessive consumption of synthetic plastics in the world and related problems such as microplastic pollution, the results of this study can be effective on production of bioplastic instead of synthetic polymers. The manuscript needs minor revision in order to accept for publication in Catalysis journal. The comments are presented below:
1. Please update the statistic about plastic containing petroleum in lines 34-35.
2. Please insert the abbreviation of PLA in front of polylactic acid in line 84.
3. Please bring the full name of PHAs in line 133.
4. The Fig. 1 don’t show the interaction of environmental condition and microorganism activity. Please revised it.
5. In my opinion, it was better to describe the effective environmental condition on bioplastic degradation after type of bioplastics.
