Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript reports waste-Extracted Zn and Ag Co-doped Spent Catalyst-Extracted V2O5 for Photocatalytic Degradation of Congo Red Dye: Effect of Metal-Nonmetal Co-doping. Some points in this manuscript should be improved and thus I recommended a major revision.

1) Why Ag peak is not appear in the XRD pattern of [Ag0.05 ZnO0.05 V2O5 (0. 90)]N?

2. TEM analysis can be valuable for this manuscript.

3. The charge carriers dynamics should be further evaluated by transient photocurrent response and EIS analyses. Identifying the active radicals during the photocatalytic activity can be shine more light onto the photocatalytic mechanism. The photocatalytic mechanism can also be further discussed by referencing some related important works (Catalysts 2022, 12, 1427; Environmental Research 212 (2022) 113394; Journal of Molecular Liquids 326 (2021) 115372).

4. The current photocatalytic results should be compared with the reported studies.

Title: Waste-Extracted Zn and Ag Co-doped Spent Catalyst-Extracted V2O5 for Photocatalytic Degradation of Congo Red Dye: Effect of Metal-Nonmetal Co-doping

The work carried out in the manuscript is very interesting and seems scientifically logical. The authors have added good technical value and knowledge to remove the water waste specially dyes by modifying waste materials. However, there are numerous inaccuracies in this work and before publication, it needs to restructure the research manuscript properly and diligently as the current presentation is not acceptable. Therefore, I would like to recommend this article for "Major Revision".

Comments

1.

2.      Add more numerical values in abstract like results of effect of pH, contact time and that of kinetic study results.

3.      Keywords need to revise. Should be specific

4.      Last paragraph of introduction need to revise. Authors should discuss the research question and what they are going to perform.

5.      Fig2 XRD pattern in not refined. Should provide with more refined peaks

6.      Fig 6 in addition to PSD, N2 adsorption-desorption curve should also be provided

7.      Effect of pH of CR should also be studied

8.      Mechanism of degradation of CR should be discussed in detail

9.      In introduction discuss some latest materials used for the removal of dyes from waste water. Author should consult these articles as guideline for designing mechanism of degradation and should cite in revised manuscript, Journal of Molecular Liquids 356 (2022) 119036, Inorganic Chemistry Communications 145 (2022) 110008, Chemical Physics Letters 805 (2022) 139939.

10.  More results (characterizations and application) should be summarized in conclusion section

11.  There are so many typo grammatical errors in whole manuscript, should be revised by some native speaker and formatting should be checked.

Reviewer 3 Report

In this study the authors prepared two new photocatalysts [Ag0.05 ZnO0.05 V2O5(0.90)] and [Ag0.05 ZnO0.05 V2O5(0.90)]N, synthesized from waste extracted staring materials. Both materials were characterized with XRD, SEM, BET, XPS, diffuse reflectance and PL spectra. The photocatalysts were able to photodegrade efficiently congo red dye reaching 89.9% and 83.4% for [Ag0.05 ZnO0.05 V2O5(0.90)] and [Ag0.05 ZnO0.05 V2O5(0.90)]N dyes, respectively in 120 min irradiation time.

The manuscript is well written, I will accept this manuscript for publication after addressing the following issues:

1.       In the Introduction part the authors should mention similar metal oxide photocatalysts that are able to degrade various dyes.

2.       At the conclusion part the authors should compare the performance of their system with other examples already reported in the literature.

3.       What is the pH of the solution during the photodegradation experiments?

4.       Can the authors propose a photocatalytic mechanism of both composites?
