Effects of White LED Lighting with Specific Shorter Blue and/or Green Wavelength on the Growth and Quality of Two Lettuce Cultivars in a Vertical Farming System
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
In the work presented to me for the review, a very important problem was raised with the use of LED lamps that allows to examine the effect of W LEDs light sources on the growth and quality of butterhead and romaine lettuce. Supplementary lighting only red and blue LED light can cause to difficulties in visual assessment of plants healthy such as disease symptoms, nutritional deficiencies, and physiological disorders. Therefore, the research results resulting from the conducted experiments are very promising and suggestive that these specific W LEDs lights can be commercially used to grow leave vegetable in vertical farming for year-round production.
Details are provided in the manuscript

1) How many containers have been prepared for the experiments?
=> Line 117 and 118: We revised the information of number plants in one container and add the number of containers “(12 plants of each cultivar per a container; 52 × 37 × 9 cm, L × W × H, and two containers used for growing each cultivar in each treatment)”
2) Please provide a detailed description of How the experiments were assumed. How many combinations were there in each experience? How many repetitions were there in one combination? How many plants were in one repetition. How the plants were sampled for analysis and measurements. Please complete this information in the individual sections of the Materials and Methods chapter
=> Line 131 – 135: We assumed two experiments that were conducted in this study.
=> Line 178 – 179: We referred “two repetitions” and “four plants” used for measuring measurements and analyses
Reviewer 2 Report
Good morning.
Everibody.
The titled paper "Effects of White LED Lighting with Specific Shorter Blue and/or Green Wavelength on Two Lettuce Growth and Quality in a Vertical Farming System" is a great document where the benefits of the application of different light treatments on 2 lettuce cultivars are discussed. The introduction, methodology, results and analysis of the results are very well supported by statistics and with reference to some published papers.
I have enjoyed reviewing this paper and it certainly generates interesting results for the area of knowledge of indoor vertical farms.
Some small suggestions can be reviewed in the attached document.
Regards

Author Response
1) For the authors in order to improve the introduction section. it is recommended to include: a small comparison of the comparative advantages of growing indoors versus high-tech greenhouse, passive greenhouse, low tunnels and open field. Include a study on lettuce where artificial light has been applied.
=> Line 35 – 50: We improved introduction with vertical farming.
=> Line 99 – 104: We added “study on lettuce”.
2) Methods: Please for the reader's convenience: Include a process diagram with relevant aspects and at each stage photographs of the experimental tests.
=> We added Figure 1 for illustrating fours light LEDs systems in this study and two experiments related to electricity and PPFD.
3) Table 1: it would be convenient to include photographs of the lamps...
=> We add Figure 1 for four light LED systems used in this study.
4) Table 3 and 4: to accommodate the table on a single page
=> We revised all tables in within one single page.
5) Conclusion: To deepen in the conclusion to highlight further aspects. Recommendations for future studies in other regions and for other types of crops should also be included. Even under other production systems.
=> We deeply revised the conclusion.
