Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The revised title “Valorization of nutritional potential and specialized metabolites 2 of basil cultivars depending on cultivation method” is more suitable for the study, which could be interest with practical application. The following minor revisions are suggested.

Introduction is well organized but it will be more accurate if provide more information about the effect of soilless systems on specialized metabolites.

In table 3, please use for all parameters except vit C only 1 digital after the comma.

Line 325, delete ‘highly’, differences are statistical different or not.

Lines 351 & 354, for such high values use integer’s numbers.

Figure 2 caption need revised; should contain all necessary information so the author to understand the figure (absent of S.E. explanation, letter explanation should be transferred at the end of the caption).

The novelty character of paper should be marked. Major detatails and a graphical scheme should be added for Plant material, Cultivation in floating system and cultivation in soil in the open field.

Introductive lines for Antioxidant capacity should be added on updated research on antioxidant properties and related references should be added such as:

Durazzo A. Study Approach of Antioxidant Properties in Foods: Update and Considerations.  Foods. 02/2017; 6(3):17., DOI:10.3390/foods6030017.

The paragraph Specialized metabolites content and antioxidant capacity of basil cultivars  should be reorganized in Tables and Figure. Data of Vitamin C, TPC, TFC  and TNFC should be described and discussed together antioxidant data. Correlations with pigment compounds should ba also marked and discussed.

This manuscript is a resubmission of an earlier submission. The following is a list of the peer review reports and author responses from that submission.

Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript assesses the nutrient composition and morphological characteristics of three different basil cultivars under two cultivation methods, conventional in open field and floating hydroponic system. The central idea of the manuscript is interesting, the introduction section is well written and authors determined a number of morphological and physico-chemical parameters. However there is a major issue the authors need to address, concerning the statistical analysis and the presentation of the results. I strongly suggest to the authors to fully rewrite results and discussion. Considering the comment mentioned below, a major revision is required for this work. Results, discussion and conclusions for the effect of cultivation system (eg lines 230-233, 256-258, 448-451) without statistical analysis is not exist. Moreover, a two way anova would be useful so to clarify which factor is more important for the determined parameters. Otherwise the title, the introduction should be changed and to focus only to cultivar effect.

  1. Authors must to include a metabolites profiling using GCMS and HPLC, which conclude the important primary and secondary metabolites in open field floating hydroponics basil cultivars.
  2. The critical discussion of data is missing. No original conclusions are presented.
  3. The Concluding remarks section is really generalist and unattractive and provides not too much information. For instance, authors could include mentions to latest challenges in the field.
  4. It would be good to include some more current reference.
  5. In the reference part, some format errors could be found, please double check.
  6. Considering all these weaknesses I do not recommend publication of the manuscript in its present form.

Reviewer 3 Report

The comparison of plants grown it two regimes can be interesting, but at the moment it is impossible to assay the quality of the paper because of the lack of substantial information about the light regime. How the greenhouse illumination was provided, what kind of lamps was used, what was their spectrum, PPFD and, last but not least, photoperiod?

Light regime is crucial for both photomorphogenesis and the amount of phytochemicals.

Considering the technical side of the MS, some tables should be converted into figures and some photos added to make the paper more readable.
