Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This study aimed to determine the wheat varieties' responses to RSI and RNDVI as well as their impact on yield and yield-related traits under variable N supply and terminal heat stress. In my opinion, this is an interesting article with interesting objectives and content. It is well-suited to the journal. It provides detailed and valuable information and should be of interest to readers. The paper is recommended for acceptance after minor revisions.

1- I would suggest improving the introduction by including articles that discuss the application of this study.

2- For the prediction of yield characteristics, the authors used simple linear regressions. I recommend using multiple regression models. The performance of prediction may be improved by incorporating RSI and RNDVI as inputs into the models.

3- The root mean square error (RMSE) must be considered when evaluating performance

4- In conclusion, the practical applications of this methodology should be discussed.

Reviewer 2 Report

General:

This paper is nicely drafted article about wheat varietal response under variable nitrogen application and terminal heat stress. It will help in decision making processes of selecting lines for addressing heat tolerance

Abstract:

Line 12- Please highlight introductory problem statement in 2-3 line and why you are doing research.

Line 24: Please write 1-2 lines about future implications of this work.

Keywords: Can be minimized with one word and total of 5-6 words.

Introduction: Nicely written introduction.

Line 33-43: Please check recent review paper on heat stress on wheat:

Yadav, M.R., Choudhary, M., Singh, J., Lal, M.K., Jha, P.K., Udawat, P., Gupta, N.K., Rajput, V.D., Garg, N.K., Maheshwari, C. and Hasan, M., 2022. Impacts, Tolerance, Adaptation, and Mitigation of Heat Stress on Wheat under Changing Climates. International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 23(5), p.2838.

Conclusion

I would suggest the authors to have a more supported discussion with references considering the main point: The limitations of breeding or genetics on N response and considerations when to apply the studied methodology and then the potential next steps or further investigation to address these limitations. Heat tolerance mechanism includes all genomics, proteomics, agronomic and other, so author should highlight somewhere in conclusion. It should include limitation and future implications.
