Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The study was designed to obtain fatty acid (FA) concentration data in distinct groups of plants found in grasslands in the Appalachian Mountains region (Allegheny Plateau). The FA concentrations were also measured throughout the growing season.

The manuscript is a descriptive study and presents us with an interesting theme, it demonstrates the pattern of FA variation between forage plants and throughout the growing season. Another interesting point is the demonstration of the relationship between the concentration of crude protein and FA.

The attached file contains all the notes of my review. My main concerns are with a clearer and more detailed description of the places where the plant collections were carried out, as well as with the way in which the tables are presented. For me all this needs to be improved, as well as the presentation of the results in the tables. In addition, it is necessary to explain in the manuscript the reasons why the N was different between the evaluated species and the collection dates.

Reviewer 2 Report

The study was relatively straight forward and met the goal of determining fatty acid content of several different species across the growing season.  The presentation is good.  Just a few minor edits include:

 Line 45: spelling of forbs

Line 238:  higher rather than high

 Line 341: comma after extent

To whom it is concerned,

I am pleased to re-submit the original research article entitled Variation of fatty acids concentration in grasses, legumes, and forbs in the Alleghany Plateau by Dr. Rayburn and Dr. Whetsell for consideration for publication in Agronomy.  We made the revisions based on reviewer comments.

The following corrections have been made:

Line 45, still on line 45, forbs spelling has been corrected.

Line 238, now at line 235, “higher” has been written replacing “high”.

Lines 241, now at line 338, a comma has been added after "extend".

Thank you for your consideration of our manuscript!

Sincerely,
