In this work the anthocyanin and lignin content and the expression of some genes involved in the metabolism of these compounds were evaluated, and some of the evaluated genes related to the observed changes in accumulation of anthocyanins and lignin, during cold storage post-harvesting. Also, some anatomical changes associated to the post-harvesting cold storage are described.

The manuscript entitled "Comparative Physiological Analysis of Lignification and Anthocyains Metabolism and Correlated Genes Expression in Red Toona sinensis Buds during Cold Storage" authored by Zhao et al. is interesting, but is very poorly written. Many statements are unclear and confusing. It is not clear which leaf, the leaflets, and petiole were sampled for the analysis. The expression pattern of the genes studied in leaves and petiole on cold treatment is not at all clear and needs thorough rewriting. I think that the manuscript have the following several drawbacks about the description, data presentations, and some details and cannot be considered for publication. 

General comments

One of the major claims of authors in this manuscript is the recoloration of the red T. sinensis buds while storage. It is not clear from the provided pictures of Figure 1A the decolaration from day 0-3. Even in Fig. 1A-1 (day 0), we can see the green color that is not significantly changed visually in Fig. 1A-IV. It is better to provide a clear picture of decoloration. 

Major comments

Line 99-101: A portion of the samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen ............. constant weight for lignin content determination. As mentioned above, the red and green color parts are clearly visible in Fig 1A-1 (0 d) and 1A-IV (3 d). Always the results obtained would depend on the sample collection. It is better to explain clearly which leaf was selected and the leaflets and petiole were sampled for the analysis.

Line 161-164: The figure numbers need to be precise, including the sub-numbers. 

Line 170: Anthocyanins and lignin contents are important indexes that influence the aging of red T. sinensis buds. This statement may be shifted to the beginning of Line 165.

Line 171-172: The anthocyanins content of the leaves was higher than that of petioles, and the anthocyanins content of the leaves was 5 times that of the petioles. Which day? Kindly specify.

Line 173: The anthocyanins content represented increased firstly after a decline during red T. sinensis buds storage. Need to rewrite, not clear.

Line 237: ........... TsCAD, and TsCCoAOMT decreased. Figure 4E and 4J, it is not. Need to reconsider the writing style and explain the expression of genes. Similarly, for the genes that explain the increased expression. A few of them are not matching with the claim.

Line 242-244: In the petioles of red T. sinensis buds, the expressive of TsPAL showed a trend of first rising and declining, and the expressive levels of TsPAL stored for 3 d were not significant compared with 0 d. The statement is confusing. At 0 d (control), the expression of PAL is at maximum and then declined at 1 d of refrigeration and constantly increased at 2 and 3 d. 

The authors need to carefully examine the expression pattern of the different genes studied in leaf and petiole and explain it properly, especially considering the control (0 d). I think up to line 256, the authors need to rewrite the statements to give a better picture of the expression pattern of the genes.

Line 261: The relative expressive level of leaves and petioles of red T. sinensis buds were 1 at stored for 0 d. Don't know why this statement needs to be here since earlier, also authors explain the expression data as relative levels. 

Line 263: ..........the expressive levels of TsCHS and TsCHI...... From Fig. 5A, I could not see any difference in expression for TsCHS for 1 and 2 d for leaves. The authors claim there is a slight increase in expression, explain.

Line 260-277: Need thorough rewriting of the gene expression for leaves and petiole for better understanding.

Figure 6 needs to be modified if needs to be incorporated into the manuscript. It is not informative and clear how it will give an overall representation of the senescence mechanism.

I have read the manuscript, and suggest some minor revisions before to accept the paper for publication in Agronomy.

1.      The authors need to improve the quality of the figures.

2.      Check the abbreviations throughout the manuscript and introduce the abbreviation when the full word appears the first time in the text and then use only the abbreviation (For example, POD etc. in the abstract). And it should be in both abstract as well as in the remaining part of the manuscript. Make a word abbreviated in the article that is repeated at least three times in the text, not all words need to be abbreviated.

3.      The paper needs moderate language revisions
