Review: Fractal Geometry in Precipitation
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThis paper systematically reviews the classical perspectives of fractal measures used in analysis of time series of precipitation, and discusses the new perspectives of precipitation fractality at temporal and spatial scales as well as for classification of climatic features. In my opinion, the article is well researched and logically clear. However, as a review article, an outlook of future challenges is very necessary, which will help relevant researchers to understand the remaining difficulties and hot spots in Fractal geometry in precipitation. If the author can add to this section, I will gladly agree to publish it
Author Response
Thank you very much for the suggestion. Accordingly, we have added a brief section 3.3 on “Future challenges” in the new version of the revised paper, just before the concluding remarks.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe manuscript under review is a review itself, devoted to the use of fractal geometry in meteorological studies. It proposes to look at precipitation process as an example of chaotic variables resulting from non-linear dynamical system, presented by set of equations. Chaotic solutions of these equations are characterized by fractal dimensions. The manuscript is well organized into four parts: introductory, the second, describing the classical perspectives of fractal measures (the analysis of precipitation time series with monofractal and multifractal approaches), the third, devoted to perspectives of fractality at both temporal and spatial scales with classification of climatic features, and the fourth, concluding one. The reviewer finds this manuscript the good work trying to provide some synthetic approach necessary in the present time after long period of analytically diversifications. The work looks mad enough to worth the publication.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsDear Editor,
Please find my review of a manuscript atmosphere-2825042 "Review: Fractal geometry in precipitation" by Robert Monjo and Oliver Meseguer-Ruiz submitted to Atmosphere, Section: Climatology, Special Issue: Geometry in Meteorology and Climatology, for consideration for possible publication. This review aims to identify both classical and emergent geometrical techniques used in the analysis of climate complexity of the precipitation.
This review examines the different approaches used in the identification and analysis of the complexity of the observed precipitation, taking advantage of its geometry footprint. In this review, authors present a variety of approaches ranging from classical perspectives of fractal-based techniques to new perspectives at temporal and spatial scales as well as for classification of climatic features, including monofractal dimension, multifractal approaches, Hurst exponent, Shannon entropy and time scaling in intensity-duration-frequency curves.
The manuscript is well written, its topic is suitable for the Special Issue Geometry in Meteorology and Climatology, and it could be accepted for publication.
Yours faithfully,
The Reviewer
