Hydrodynamic Drivers of Nutrient and Phytoplankton Dynamics in a Subtropical Reservoir
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Manuscript ID water-1713168 entitled “Hydrodynamic drivers of nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics in a subtropical reservoir” presents an valuable topic that may be of interest to readers. The subject of the manuscript corresponds to the profile of the Water journal.
In my opinion, the manuscript is written in the correct language, the layout is logical and understandable. The introduction and background clearly introduce the reader to the research tasks carried out. The goal is clear and clear to understand. The conclusions correspond with the research results. My minor remarks below:
1. In the abstract and conclusions, the Authors should present the most important research results in numerical form.
2. Graphical abstract should be prepared. Readers would be able to easily familiarize themselves with the intention of the authors and the research scheme.
3. There is no indication of the type of devices, analytical equipment, models, producers and countries of origin used. It needs to be completed.
4. Please give the information in methodology section about statistical analysis of the research results. Without a comparative analysis, the results and conclusions are unreliable, with no scientific value.

The study 'Hydrodynamic drivers of nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics in a subtropical reservoir' is an interesting research and timely. The manuscript is almost ready for acceptance. Below are some comments for the authors to consider.
- Is water quality data available for location(s) downstream of the dam? In that case, the authors are suggested to compare the changes upstream and downstream of the dam.
- Some more discussion on the applied three-dimensional hydrodynamic model is needed.
- How were the changes in river water temperature simulated?
- Briefly discuss the uncertainty in estimation of temperature and Chlorophyll-a temporally and spatially.
- Editorial: (a) Fig 1: the symbol for monitored points and sensor platform is almost similar. Consider using a different symbol. (b) Fig 4: texts are difficult to read.
