Author Response

Thank you for your careful review.

Reviewer 2 Report

This is an interesting study. Nevertheless, it needs some further improvements. In general, there are still some occasional grammar errors throughout the manuscript, especially the article "the," "a," and "an" is missing in many places; please make a spellchecking in addition to these minor issues. The reviewer has listed some specific comments that might help the authors further enhance the manuscript's quality.

  1. Specific Comments

·                  A list of acronyms is needed

Introduction

  • The objectives should be more explicitly stated.
  • Please elaborate on the introduction section. In this regard, the following literature may be helpful: << Water spread mapping of multiple lakes using remote sensing and satellite data>>, << A new approach to mapping cultural ecosystem services>>, << Artificial neural network optimized with a genetic algorithm for seasonal groundwater table depth prediction in Uttar Pradesh, India>> you may consider additional references as well.
  • What is the novelty of this work?

  • Methods
  • The methodology limitation should be mentioned.
  • All variables should be explained.

  • Results
  • This section is well written.

  • Discussion
  • Overall, the discussion part is week. The Discussion should summarize the manuscript's main finding(s) in the context of the broader scientific literature and address any limitations of the study or results that conflict with other published work.

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper by Song et al, is well written and sound, with some interesting ideas and its broad perspective based on observations and detailed analytical modelling. The methodology is well described. The data presented as well as the obtained results in the manuscript is excessive in content and interesting for the readers of Water. As such, the work is a very good fit for the journal, but there are a few details/comments/suggestions shown below that should be addressed and expanded before publication.

 - Please provide the type of goundwater sources and their use (well, borehole, drinking, irrigation etc.). For the sake of completeness and extrapolation of the obtained results in the wider community, it is better to add this information. In addition, a land use map of the study area will provide the necessary and valuable information to ¨link¨ results with possible type of water use.

- It is not clear to me from the manuscript how the spatial distribution has been carried out. Which interpolation method has been used? Are the results independent from the adopted interpolation methods? Would you have obtained the same results with other interpolation methods? Are the obtained results smoothed? Which GIS software has been used? Please explain these points in detail.

-      Section 4.2. A little more elaboration or demonstration here might be useful; it’s the final landing point of the paper and seems like it could be helpful to illustrate this potential application with more detail.

-     A minor formal issue is the list of bullet points in the conclusion section, which I suggest to replace by running text.
