Review comments on Ping et al

Marine calcareous biological ooze thermoluminescence and its application for paleoclimate change since middle Pleistocene

The aim of the study was to assess variability in natural thermoluminescence (TL) in samples of marine biological ooze from two deepwater cores, to assess paleoclimatic changes and climate cycles since the middle Pleistocene. To undertake this project, the authors assessed variability over time in the TL, δ18O and carbonate content in sediments and foraminifers from marine biological ooze samples from two deepwater cores, one from the Indian and one from the Atlantic Ocean. The results of the study showed that there was a significant correlation in the ratio between TL intensity and δ18O in the core samples, and temporal variations in these parameters corresponded to variation in glacial and interglacial stages in the Earth’s climate over time. In addition, the study showed significant positive and negative correlations with various trace elements occurring in carbonate in the biological ooze in the core samples.

Overall, the data presented in the paper achieves the study aims and provides an original contribution to improving our knowledge of use of deep-sea cores for the patterns of cycles in the paleoclimate since the Pleistocene period. This data will assist in conducting future studies that assess TL and δ18O in samples from deepwater cores to assess long term changes in the Earth’s climate. The statistical basis for the correlation analysis to investigate the relationships between TL and δ18O in biological ooze samples were appropriate to address the aims of the study and the figures are relevant to presenting the results of the study.

However, as detailed below there are major issues relating to the current manuscript. Therefore, I consider that the current manuscript requires major revision prior to further review to assess its suitability of the for publication.

Specific comments on the manuscript are detailed below.

Given that the author’s first language is not English, I have marked on the attached PDF document, numerous suggested spelling and grammatical changes to improve the quality and flow of the manuscript. The authors should review the suggested changes detailed below and marked on the PDF and have the revised manuscript grammar checked and reviewed before its resubmission.

The authors should be consistent with capitalization or lowercase of Ninetyeast Ridge in the text.

Line 75 “and pose extremely important significance for global climate change” what does pose mean? The authors should revise the text to clarify this phrase.

Line 89 “The north is directly related to Arctic glacier activity”  what does north b?  The authors should revise the text to clarify this phrase.

Lines 98-99 “Therefore, this area is regarded as the sensitive area to experience the climate change in the Earth”.  This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Line 102-103 “….which is a sign of highly sensitive climate change.” This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Line 154 “Due to rare G. ruber for oxygen isotope test (Liu et al.,2018).”  This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Line 282 What does the Coccida population refer to? The authors should revise the text to clarify this.

Line 324 “Among them, 73 samples are consistent…” This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Lines 372-373 “The paleoclimate shows the characteristics of the interglacial period, as the interglacial period with the glacier cycle.” This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

There are several issues with the references. In some references the first letter of each word in the paper title is capitalised. The authors should check previous issues of the journal regarding presentation of references. For some references, the first letter of each word in the journal name should be capitalised or the journal title spelt out in full and not abbreviated. For some references, the first letter of each word in the paper title is capitalised and should be lower case.

Major Comments:

1、Given that the author’s first language is not English, I have marked on the attached PDF document, numerous suggested spelling and grammatical changes to improve the quality and flow of the manuscript. The authors should review the suggested changes detailed below and marked on the PDF and have the revised manuscript grammar checked and reviewed before its resubmission.

Response:

I have revised spelling and grammatical changes marked on the PDF in the manuscript .

  • The authors should be consistent with capitalization or lowercase of Ninetyeast Ridge in the text.

Response:

I have revised it in the manuscript. See line 12, 64 and 98.

  • Line 75 “and pose extremely important significance for global climate change” what does pose mean? The authors should revise the text to clarify this phrase.

Response:

Revised as follow:

......, which is of great significance to global climate change research. See line 79-80.

4、Line 89 “The north is directly related to Arctic glacier activity”  what does north b?  The authors should revise the text to clarify this phrase.

Response:

Revised as follow:

The north Atlantic ice-rafted detritus belt ( IRD belt) is directly related to Arctic glacier activity. See line 93-94.

5、Lines 98-99 “Therefore, this area is regarded as the sensitive area to experience the climate change in the Earth”.  This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Response:

 Revised as follow:

Therefore, the north Atlantic IRD belt is regarded as the sensitive area to experience the climate change in the Earth. See line 102 and 103.

6、Line 102-103 “….which is a sign of highly sensitive climate change.” This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Response:

Revised as follow:

It is a highly sensitive indicator of climate change. See line 107.

7、Line 154 “Due to rare G. ruber for oxygen isotope test (Liu et al.,2018).”  This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.

Response:

Revised as follow:

Due to the limited number of G.ruber available for oxygen isotope test (Liu et al.,2018). See 160-161.

8、Line 282 What does the Coccida population refer to? The authors should revise the text to clarify this.

Response:

Revised as follow:

Rhizaria population. See Line 291.

9、Line 324 “Among them, 73 samples are consistent…” This sentence should be revised to clarify its meaning.
