Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript summarized the rescue technology of dike leakage including the formation causes and development mechanism of the dike leakage, the dike leakage detection, plugging and gas tightening technology. The future research direction of rescue technology was clarified. The topic of this manuscript is meaningful. However, the following comments should be well addressed.

1. The language and formatting should be improved. Such as, in line 22: “leak.. ”, in line 31:hm2”.

2. As a review paper which will be considered to publish in an international journal, there are many references in Chinese and in the same journal. More references published in international journal should be cited.

3. Polymer grouting technology has been widely used in dike leakage rescue engineering. Thus, the polymer grouting technology also should be introduced in this manuscript.

Author Response

1.The language and format of the article have been modified in detail. Line 22 and line 31 have been corrected.

2.  More references published in international journal(74 and 106-110) have been added and cited.

3. Non-water reaction polymer, and polymer grouting technology are important for dike leakage rescue engineering. The corresponding contents are introduced in this manuscript.

Author Response

Reply of critical remarks:

1.After in-depth consideration, the usage of "gas lighting" is wrong, and the professional term should be "sealing", which has been modified in the text. “Gas righting” is the direct translation of Chinese noun.

2.According to the review comments, more references published in international journal(74 and 106-110) have been added and cited.

3.Chinese references has been marked “in Chinese”.

Minor remarks:

1.Line 31, "hm2" has been modified to "km2".

2.Line 35 is Chinese proverb, line 57 and 58 have been citied the source.

3.Line 61, “and equipment”  has been removed.

4.Line 104, ‘an embankment located in the area of the old meander bed, which was not recognised as a highly permeable layer” has been added.

5.Lines 106-108 is a translation error and has been changed to "As one of the most serious and dangerous hazards in dike engineering, research on leak mechanism is relatively less."

6.Line 115 , "overflow" has been removed.

7.Line 132,  ‘The suction size…” has been modified to “The suction value’.

8.Figure 2., here "air closure" means "sealing". The materials using in leak rescue are usually clayey sand in downstream reach of the Yellow River.

9.Line 197, PIV has been changed to LSPIV, and cited the article "Considerations When Applying Large-Scale PIV and PTV for Determining River Flow Velocity".

10.Line 417-423 , A special paragraph has been added to explain the working principle of the equipment. ——

Adjust the length of the series rope according to the water depth at the water side of the dike, and drag the device manually or on board to keep it in suspension and move slowly from the downstream to the upstream. When the device moves near the inlet of the leak, the water pressure and the water suction at the hole will suck the counterweight block and SAP series rope into the leak hole, and the duckweed will sink and be fixed at the outside of the water inlet under the pressure difference between the inside and outside. The water soluble bag on the outer layer of the SAP ball is dissolved after immersion, and the SAP material expands rapidly after absorbing water. The ball is closely combined with the tunnel wall to form a series of closed spaces in the tunnel, achieving the effect of grade-by-grade plugging and sealing in the tunnel.
