Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In the title it is not necessary to insert characteristics of the concentration

In the summary, the authors synthesized the results achieved in the study. It is necessary to reformulate and insert the conclusions of the study considering the objective of the work.

In the introduction, make clear the hypothesis of the study. In addition, insert research to characterize the state of the art regarding the topic under study.

In the results:

Below the title of figure 2 insert the number of averages that resulted in the standard error (n =x )

Throughout the text correct the probability for p ≤ 0.01 or p ≤ 0.05

It is necessary to broaden the discussion by inserting new studies to substantiate the results obtained.

Reviewer 2 Report

Generally comments

1. Authors have simulated shallow-water ecosystems in this research. Did the source of experimental soil from agricultural water catchment or farmland? Authors should demonstrate the relationship between shallow-water ecosystems and the coastal wetlands system.

2. What’s the innovation of this article, please elaborate in the abstract.

3.The introduction of the manuscript should be improved. The connections among paragraphs are unclear.

Detailed comments:

1. Line19 and Line119 “Sampling after 24 hours of fertilization” and “Sampling at 24h after fertilization”. Which one is the specific sampling time?

2. Line23-24 “The correlation between microbial functional genes nirS, nirK and nosZ and the dissolved N2O concentration was the highest.”  Were they all the highest? nirS, nirK and nosZ or nirS, nirK and nosZ

3. Line28 Shallow-water ecosystem or water-soil interface of wetland ecosystem?

4.  Line40 “The coastal agricultural catchment area is potential source of N2O release in the atmosphere.” N2O release in the atmosphere should be N2O release to the atmosphere or N2O in the atmosphere.

5.         Line41 Where is the river channels? Are the river channels natural water body? What is the relationship between the river channels and the agricultural water catchment?

6.  Line42 “Production process” should be replaced with N transformation.

7.Line47&53 Showed?

8. Line60 What does the “soil saline-alkali degree (EC)” mean?

9.Line68-69 Are environmental changes and human activities the most uncertain key point in the N2O emission? This word doesn’t make sense.

10. Please supply detailed source information of experimental soil. Agricultural water catchment? Farmland? Drainage ditches?

11.     Line130 20 ml in total. 5 ml water and 10 ml atmosphere. It is difficult to extract 10 ml gas form the headspace bottle.

12.     Line142 “After 24 hours of fertilization”?

13.     Many relevant studies have invested the BP neural network model. I suggest a systematic search of these references and making a demonstration of these references in material and method.

14.     Line147-148 Water EC is correct. Soil EC or soil EC1:5?

15.     Table2 “1EC represents electrical conductivity; 2DO represents dissolved oxygen; 3DOC represents dissolved organic carbon; 4** p<0.01; 5* p<0.05.” They are not in the table.

16.     Table3 Where is “1X1”?

17.     The discussion section is not adequate, and more attention should be paid to the underlying mechanism of soil salinity and alkalinity effect on N2O through biotic and abiotic factors. Authors haven’t use enough and valid references to demonstrate the mechanism of N2O production processes.

18.     The conclusion section should be more concise.
