Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper deals with the study of analysis of simulation the alkali-aggregate expansion and the influence law of AAR on dam deformation and stress with help of elastic-plastic finite element method. Especially it is considered that the originality of this paper is the load combinations that may be encountered during the operation of arch dam.  The method of analysis of expansion simulation of this paper is very interesting for reviewer.

However, reviewer cannot understand the meaning of this article. The alkali-aggregate expansion does not merely only expand. Clacking occurs in the alkali-aggregate expansion by all means. Also, the strain of alkali-aggregate expansion does not stop in 800 μ. The expansion strain increases more than 800 μ.

Then in this article, it is considered that the modeling and hypothesis of the alkali-aggregate expansion is wrong. Then it is considered that the completeness of the paper is very low.

Therefore, it is difficult that this paper is improved enough to be published in the in Journal of water.

1. Please remove the headings in the abstract, and modify it.

2. Line 10: Workability generally indicates the fresh properties of concrete. Please change it to another appropriate word. Besides, the key parameters of the concrete proportions and experimental results are missing. What is the relationship between the actual AAR degree and the simulation results? How the linear expansion coefficient value in line 149 is obtained?

Reviewer 3 Report

The work is interesting and necessary for exactly the object for which it is intended, but I do not see its applicability to other objects.

In the abstract, remove the words: (1) Background:  (2) Methods:. (3) Results:  (4) Conclusions:.

A abstract is a continuous unit .

The literature review should describe where the method used is described and why it is used

Lines 102-106: Correct spelling mistakes.

Line 112: Should be a new paragraph.

Figure 15-19 above does not need a figure title because the information is repeated in the figure title

Conclusions need to be specified.

The work examines one problem with a specific object, the article has no application to other objects and does not answer the question of what to do if another object were chosen. It is not explained how dangerous this state is suffering alkali-aggregate deformation of 800 με.

Reviewer 4 Report

In this manusicript, the expansion of concrete suffering the alkali-aggregate reaction was simulated by means of overall temperature rise of the dam. By adopting the elastic-plastic finite element method, not only the working behavior of the arch dam suffering AAR under different load combinations was calculated, but also the expansion process of the arch dam yield zone and the change law of the arch dam deformation with further expansion under different load combinations were analyzed. A control index of allowable alkali-aggregate expansion of dam concrete under various load combinations was put forward. The authors conducted a study on numerical simulation of the alkali-aggregate expansion process in arch dams and its influence, which is quite innovative. It is suggested to be accepted for possible publish after minor revision.

(1) The formulas mentioned in the manusicriptneed to be marked with the source.

(2) In conclusion part, the authors are suggested to highlight important findings and include afterthought of this work.

(3) There are some spelling errors, such as in Line35, page 1, “repairmen” would be “repairment”. Please check the manuscript carefully.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

Reviewer read the cover letter of authors. However, reviewer cannot understand the explanation of this cover letter.

The dam having the alkali-aggregate expansion is very dangerous regardless of meso-scale level and macro-scale level. Reviewer cannot permit the alkali-aggregate expansion on the dam concrete. Therefore, it is considered that there is not a meaning of the purpose of this article.

Furthermore, reviewer cannot understand the meaning to calculate quantity of expansion of the alkali-aggregate reaction on the condition that alkali-aggregate reaction does not produce.

Then it is difficult that this paper is improved enough to be published in the in Journal of water.
