Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

The article Spatial Structure and Evolution of Territorial Function of Rural Areas at Cultural Heritage Sites from the Perspective of Social Space (article ID 1593033) is well-written and the method is accurately described. The idea behind the paper is good, but it lacks international context. With only 33 references, it is obvious that a more broad international context is needed for the paper to be publishable. At this stage, I would recommend some Minor revisions. There are some comments, that the authors need to address, and they are as follows:

Please, add an international context to the paper. Have in mind the following references to do that:

L116: what exactly do you mean by “high in grade”?

Fig. 1. Some WGS84 coordinates need to be added to all of the 3 sites, which should be identified as a, b, c

It is not clear where your Results section starts. You should do that. Probably line 222

Discussion section. You should highlight if this methodology has been employed before or is novel. Make a comparison with other cultural heritage sites in the world.

Good luck with the revision!

Kind regards!

This study analyzes the spatial structure and the evolution of the rural areas at cultural heritage sites in China from the perspective of social space. In order to do that, three Chinese rural sites are used as case studies. From there, common characteristics are established that allow needs to be identified and improvements to be implemented.

The paper presents an adequate structure and a thorough scientific analysis, but it should be improved in some aspects. Firstly, the abstract should have an outline similar to the text. Besides, a Results section is needed containing points 3 and 4.

Please check the format of the tables (some texts are differently aligned), the spaces between the number and the title of the various sub-sections, and the spaces between words in the bibliography.

In point 3.1.2, using (1), (2)... can be confused with the figures data, also in brackets.

In terms of wording, there is repetition of text, for example, in lines 136-137 and 147-148; or 174 and 175, for example.

The citations in lines 83 and 96 are wrong, as they do not use the number where it corresponds.

Finally, the quality of the graphics and images is generally good, but Figure 4 should be improved.
