Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The reviewer comments of the paper «Relationship analysis between multi-parameters and ferrite number in GTAW based on ANN model»- Reviewer

The authors presented an article «Relationship analysis between multi-parameters and ferrite number in GTAW based on ANN model». However, there are several points in the article that require further explanation.

Comment 1:

The abstract needs to be improved.

Demonstrate in the abstract novelty, practical significance. Add quantitative and qualitative work results to the abstract. Describe in more detail in the abstract what multi-parameters and ferrite number is.

Comment 2:

The introduction needs to be improved.

Firstly, group quotation is unacceptable in one phrase, for example [2-9], [17-21]. Break this sentence into parts or individual sentences. For example, ... [...], ... [...], etc. Or one reference - one sentence.

Now the list of references needs to be supplemented with at least 6-8 more references published over the past 5 years. Here are some recent articles:

International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2021, 113(11-12), 3569–3583. DOI: 10.1007/s00170-021-06846-5

Metals 2021, 11(6), 981. DOI: 10.3390/met11060981

It is necessary to add a paragraph and a detailed analysis of the studied material of the workpiece. What difficulties are there in the welded process especially? Why is this material so important?

After analyzing the literature, show before formulating the goal of the "blank" spots. Which has not been previously done by other researchers. You must show the importance of the research being undertaken. Show what will be the new research approach in this article. You need to show a hypothesis.

Formulate a clear purpose of the article. After the goal, briefly list what has been done in each section.

Comment 3:

It would be better to use "2. Materials and methods" instead of "2. Orthogonal Test of Austenitic Stainless Steel Welding"

Are all figures original? If not needed appropriate citations and permissions.

It will be useful to add a welding diagram with all dimensions and designations and descriptions in the text of the article.

Add the material chemistry of the Stainless steel 304L stock in a separate table. What is the hardness of the workpiece and how was it measured?

For devices, software and machines used in research, indicate in parentheses (manufacturer, city, country).

Describe the measurement procedure in more detail. At what point in time? How is the measuring setup set up? How many repetitions of measurements? What statistical methods are used to process experimental results? Describe the experimental stand in more detail. What method of experiment planning is used and why?

Comment 4:

It would be better to use "3. Results and discussion" instead of "3. FN Prediction Models for DFSS and ASIS"

And inside section 3 you can use 3.1, 3.2, etc.

Comment 5:

It will be useful to add a section of Nomenclature in which to sign all the physical quantities and abbreviations encountered in the article. There are many physical quantities in the text and such a section will help to find the description of the necessary element.

For example,

FN             : Ferrite number

etc.

Comment 6:

Conclusions should be rewritten.

It is necessary to more clearly show the novelty of the article and the advantages of the proposed method. What is the difference from previous work in this area? Show practical relevance. Conclusions should reflect the purpose of the article.

The article is interesting, but needs to be improved. Authors should carefully study the comments and make improvements to the article step by step. After major changes can an article be considered for publication in the "Metals".

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Authors,

Your paper titled: "Relationship Analysis Between Multi-Parameters and Ferrite Number in GTAW Based on ANN Model" concerns the research of austenitic stainless steel GTAW welded joints. The problem of the influence of welding parameters on the amount of ferrite was solved by experimental research and artificial neural network. The subject of the work is current, interesting and necessary. I have some comments on the content of your manuscript. I hope they will be useful while preparing the final version of the article:

Authors affiliations: please add email addresses of all contributors.

Abstract: please explain the abbreviation: DFSS. I propose to add quantitative results.

Introduction:

[2-9] – please do not group references by more than 3. Grouping citations does not give the impression of a well-conducted literature review. Please correct the citation order of references. The Introduction is fairly short and is based on a large number of outdated (more than 10 years old) articles and books. Books are not a good source of up-to-date information due to the long publishing period. Of course, the work of these authors is iconic, but they also have more recent articles. Please pay close attention to the bibliographic description of the cited sources, e.g. in line 32 it should be: Lippold et al. [1]. I suggest extending the information on welding austenitic steels: what are the welding guidelines? What processes are used for welding? Please consider using the information provided in the papers: https://doi.org/10.3390/met10050559, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11665-021-05454-4, https://doi.org/10.1007/s40194-021-01103-5

Chapter 2 needs to be supplemented with important information about the welding procedure:

Was the welding process automatic? What electrode was used? All devices described in the article should have an appropriate description with the manufacturer's address.

Add spaces before units.

Line 72: This is not a sentence.

Improve welding terminology: wire feed rate, welding current, flow rate of ArN2.

Table 1: Why were such ranges of variability of input factors selected for the experiment?

Was VT testing of samples carried out?

Figure 1: whether these are examples of samples? Please mark the plates as described in the text: A and D.

Did the use of carbon steel sheet as run on plate not affect the FN measurement results? “Arc igniotion plates” it is not a commonly accepted technical phrase.

Chapter 3: What program was used? This does not affect the results of the calculations, but it is important in terms of repeatability of the analyzes.

Line 148: Why is 125 samples specified?

Chapter 6 should be titled: Conclusions. In the first sentence, please add that 304L steel was tested and the GTAW process was used.

References require careful formatting:

For example: [1] should be: Lippold, J. C., & Kotecki, D. J. (2005). Welding metallurgy and weldability of stainless steels. Wiley, 2005.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors have improved the article according to the comments. However, before acceptance, it would be better to highlight the data in Table 1 in a separate section, Nomenclature.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Authors,

thank you very much for all answers and explanations. When preparing the final version of the article, please pay attention to the bibliographic description of references, e.g. in [7] and [8] the first name should be abbreviated to the initial, and in [8] there is one author missing.
Good luck!
