Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper is interesting and well-written. It is a piece of well-elaborated scientific research work oriented to propose an optimization design theory according to the importance of elements for flexible cable-strut tensile structures. The aforementioned study is both intriguing and significant for scientific research and practical application. Thus, it is a good paper and should be published. The following comments are suggested for consideration prior to the publication of this paper:

(1)  In the introduction section, there is a wide introduction of the work context talked from different perspectives. Yet, some of recent works should be mentioned and commented to widen the context and strengthen the significance of the work, such as: Structural symmetry recognition in planar structures using convolutional neural networks; Feasible prestress modes for cable-strut structures with multiple self-stress states using particle swarm optimization; Symmetry representations and elastic redundancy for members of tensegrity structures.

(2)  Please explain the relations between the structural robustness and the importance of elements.

(3)  The optimized cable arrangement scheme can be used in other cable-strut tensile structures?

(4)   The comprehensive optimization rate is 27.7% in this paper, any other measures can increase the rate?

Reviewer 2 Report

In this study, the design of a flexible cable-strut tensile structure was optimized on the basis of structural robustness and element importance.

Author should answer how dynamical characteristics, of the type of structures considered in the paper, can be included in the proposed model.  Besides that the deformation should not exceed the allowable value, namely 1/250 times the span length, which was considered in the paper, should frequency constraints be considered?

Reviewer 3 Report

In this study, the authors proposed a method for the design optimisation of cable-strut tensile structure based on the importance of elements. A generic algorithm is used for the optimisation. Numerical results show that the proposed method is effective, and the robustness of the structures can be substantially improved.

Overall the paper is well-written and easy to follow.
