Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript needs several clarifications and improvements.

The motivation for this manuscript is not clear.

What can be the aim/objective of the manuscript?

What is the gap in the literature and what can be the main novelty/contribution?

The development of the hypotheses development and model specification are not clear. Are they really based on the literature or are data driven? What can be the role of the supply-side factors?

Why the selected estimation procedure?

The results needs more discussion and comparisons with findings of the previous studies.

What can be the study implications?

What can be the study limitations?

The manuscript needs additional polishing.

The manuscript needs additional English language improvements and polishing.

This work is really interesting and deserves to be published.

My only concern is related to the title itself. By exemple, "Pork Consumption Patterns Among China's Rural Population: Unpacking Cultural and Regional Influences (2000-2020)" could be more concise and clear.

Good Luck!

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper relies on a solid theoretical background and applies a strong methodological approach.

I only have a few major concerns.

First, the literature review part is very weak and almost relies on domestic publications. I would heavily suggest including a collection of international literature. This outlook might include not only pork in general but also specific pork products like ham, sausage. (E.g., studies like this: http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/foods11070997)

My second comment also refers to the literature. In the section of discussion, authors have to compare their results with previous findings. Therefore a more emphasis should be put on the story line and authors should highlight the importance and relevance of their findings.

Lastly, I miss a paragraph on the limitations, both in terms of theoretical and methodological approach.

Dear Authors,

The paper provides an interesting point of view of the Analysis of the Regional and Cultural Factors Influencing Pork Consumption Among Rural Residents in China, however it needs minor improvement.

In the abstract there is no clear goal of the research.

In the Introduction you write (line 48-51) “With the continuous development of society and the economy, noticeable changes are seen in the dietary structure of the Chinese people. In particular, demand for livestock products among urban and rural residents continually grows [2], with a noticeable surge in pork consumption activity in rural regions.” Try to explain it.

Line (70-71): “Moreover, as lifestyle concepts change, residents' preference for other meats gradually emerges.” Please develop this lifestyle concepts change.

Line 75-84 should be in the “Discussion part”. In the "Discussion" section, the authors should compare and contrast the similarity/dissimilarity of findings in this research to the findings of other studies. This way, the authors can argue how this study stands among related studies, convincing readers of the originality or confirmatory values of this study toward the literature.

In the introduction there is no clear goal of the research as well.

In the conclusion you should add that the hypothesis were verified.

You should more develop the limitations of the study. Cultural factors are mostly qualitative. You based only on quantitative statistical data and econometric studies.

At the conclusion of this work, the future research directions should be mentioned.

I suggest to add the “Conclusions and recommendation” (line 256).
