Comments and Suggestions for Authors

the introduction is too long like a review. please make it more concise and it should be no more than 2 pages (max).

line 141-145, please provide relevant citation

line 149  "Two pear tomato breeding families, UMH175 and UMH220," please provide sources

Fig 1. please provide all the details in figure legends and format the fig according to journal guidelines. each figure panel should be described.

In Berif the manuscript is not properly formatted. I want to suggest please format the manuscript and submit it again.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors make crosses and backcrossing to introduce alleles that contribute to tolerance to TYLCV in tomato. There appears to be a need for data from more years. There are several issues that need to be clarified and the presentation needs to be improved especially about whether there was any TYLCV disease detected in the trials. The statistical analysis appears overly simple.

The English needs to be improved.

Remove what may be Spanish words such as “Fechas”, “p-valor”, …,

How much economic value is there to “De la pera” variety? Or has it only got a niche market in Spain?

What is the effect of taste or texture or cooking properties of the tomatoes? Is that what the titratable acidity relates to? On Line 135, “organoleptic” is mentioned.

Can the authors show photos of  the field trial location, and photos of the plants?

Line 82: if the gene and SNP is known for ty-5, why not use CRISPR-Cas9 instead of crossing?

Line 99: “Specie” => “species”

Line 116: The Introduction usually does not have sub-headings.

Line 151: what the genotypes correspond to needs to be explained more clearly. It also seems confusing that the recessive allele ss is the functional allele ty-5 that gives tolerance to TYLCV.

Is Ty-1 = R/r, and ty-5 = S/s ? and then is it something like?

RR rr = Ty-1 …

ss SS = without Ty-1 …

ss rr = ty-5 , without Ty-1 …

RR SS = Ty-1 …

Line 190: More details are needed on the design of the trial? Was it a block design and was the blocking structure incorporated into the statistical analysis.

Line 206: how did you test for virus infection? Disease symptoms?  PCR detection? Should “ssSS” genotype not have the disease because it is susceptible to TYLCV? If “ssSS” does not get disease, then were the conditions appropriate for disease to occur in the trials? Were there other disease problems with plants?

Line 308: To make it easier for the reader to understand when a sentence like this is written, the genotypes should be written in parentheses. “….the genotype containing only ty-5 (write the genotypes in parenthesis)…”

Line 352: what does “susceptible to both genes” mean?

Line 399: I think it is useful if the authors provide the raw data as supporting files.

Figure 1 caption needs more information (what is A etc …), and it is better to  make more than one figure for this graph.

For Table 3, can authors mark with measurements were show the same trends in both years? Yield does not look consistent. Why is that?

Are there some types of additive, subtractive, or synergistic effects of the two alleles?

Use decimal points not comma in numbers.

For Figure 1C, 1D and 1E, should it be, TSS, TA, and TAA? Are the y-axes labels just typos?

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript entitled 'Effect of introgression of Ty-1 and ty-5 genes on productivity, quality, and antioxidant compounds in De la pera tomato breeding lines' explanes the effect of the introgression of Ty-1 and Ty-5 genes in tomatoes on productivity and quality traits. The conceptualization of the topic is good. authors made significant efforts to explore the impact of introgression on other traits. The manuscript is drafted perfectly and presented to readers with high quality.

One minor suggestion is that the authors should include the objectives of their investigation in the manuscript. I do not see any defined objectives in the manuscript.

The results are clearly explained and the topic has scope for breeders invovled in introgression breeding in different crops.

The manuscript may be considered for publication after a minor revision

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The supporting figure legends are not written in English.

The use of "resistance" and "tolerance" needs to be clarified/defined. A common definition of "tolerance" is that the pathogen can multiply, but the host is still healthy, and "resistance" is where the pathogen is prevented from multiplying. In some places, the genes/alleles are referred to as "tolerance" related, and in others, they are "resistance" genes.

The authors should make the peer reviewers comments open to readers after publications. This would be informative for readers.
