On the Mechanism of Formation of Conversion Titanium-Containing Coatings
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Below, please find some comments to improve the paper:
1- “Disadvantages of phosphating and chromating processes are known and repeatedly have been discussed in the literature [4-9].” Please name some disadvantage briefly.
2- It is highly recommended to use a better scheme showing the described mechanisms and reactions for coating formation on the surface of different metals of interest.
3- This seems to be a typo “shecimens”
4- Please provide details about the test set up for XPS measurements. How the sample mounted and the set up was calibrated? How the data was processed?
5- Please provide the references/data source from which the relevant peaks and binding energies were attributed to the certain elements/compounds.
6- The figure 2 (curve 1) does not reflect all these compounds: “The panoramic X-ray photoelectron spectra revealed the presence of titanium, molybdenum, fluorine and oxygen compounds, as well as iron, in these coatings (Fig. 2, curve 1),”
7- Please explain Fig.2 (curve 2) when/after Fig. 2 (curve 1) is discussed.
8- Please explain the different colors of the figures 3, 4 and 7.

The whole paper should be improved in language since grammatical mistakes can be clearly seen in some sentences. The state-of-the-art in the field should be described in more details to allow interested readers understanding the novelty of this study. The characterized means in this paper are too few to support the test data. XPS results need more discussion based on the binding energies available in literature. Furthermore, the figures quality must be enhanced significantly.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors
Dear Authors,
I have to read your manuscript with great attention and interest. The submission falls within the scope of the journal and is sufficiently original, and I have a remark, so I recommend publishing it after MINOR REVISIONS.
General impression: the test results are placed chaotically, without any systematic discussion of examined coatings, only selected data is shown, the rest is accompanied by a shallow commentary.
Tittle: On the mechanism of formation and properties of conversion titanium-containing coatings
Abstract:
It is not necessary Nio (in reaction is ok)
Introduction:
[11-12]
Feo in reaction
Ti2O3 и ZnO to correct
Results
Fig. 2- Were is the fluorine peak?
What means: “Similar dependencies were obtained for zinc and alumina substrates”- to explain.
Fig. 9. Improve the quality, illegible magnification
Prepare, as resume, the scheme of conversion titanium-containing coatings formation.
