Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper is to review the self-cleaning, anti-icing and aging test technology of composite insulators.  Thorough review has been made by the authors. However, there are few suggestions to improve the quality of manuscript.

1. The review on environmental impact on insulators has been discussed by authors. It will be great if there is percentage to be showed as indicator rather than brief explanation.

2. As the paper is classified as review, is it the figures obtained from previous study or by authors' experimental? Please clarify.

3. In section 3 has discussed on the method to develop superhydrophobic surfaces by various methods. It is noted, the contact angle for hydrophobic must achieve above 90 degree. How authors differentiate between hydrophobic and superhydrophobic.

4. There are typos in manuscript.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We added some percentage of environmental impact on insulators as indicators, such as line 181-183, line 209-211,and line 550-559.

  1. As the paper is classified as review, is it the figures obtained from previous study or by authors' experimental? Please clarify.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. The figures of this review comes from previous study of others and we put them together. The quoted pictures are marked with references.

  1. In section 3 has discussed on the method to develop superhydrophobic surfaces by various methods. It is noted, the contact angle for hydrophobic must achieve above 90 degree. How authors differentiate between hydrophobic and superhydrophobic.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We explained it in our manuscript line 262-264. The material surface contact Angle greater than 90 ° is hydrophobic surface. The contact Angle of the material surface is greater than 150 ° and the rolling Angle is less than 10 °, which is superhydrophobic.

  1. There are typos in manuscript.

Response:Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We carefully checked the typos in the manuscript and corrected them.

Reviewer 2 Report

Reviewed paper “Research Progress of Self-cleaning Anti-icing and Aging Test Technology of Composite Insulators” deals with an interesting topic and can be interesting for readers of Coatings journal. This manuscript seems to provide interesting information about cleaning of composite insulators so it may be of interest to the energy and materials community. This is the paper after making the corrections suggested by the Reviewers in the first round of reviews.

The data and analyses are well presented. The hypothesis and speculations are carefully identified. The results are significant and correctly interpreted.

This paper suits the requirements of the journal. The body text contains 10 – figures are good quality.

English of the paper is rather good – in my opinion the language of the paper should be a little improved. I am asking for corrections by a native speaker.

I find some mistakes for example:

-      Introduction chapter should be correct. Authors should include new information about topic of a paper. More information based on worldwide (global) study. The list of references should also be changed. Note the following suggestions related to the literature cited.

-      Please describe all equipment and/or software used in the experiment – please insert model of equipment (manufacturer, city, country).

-      References chapter is very comprehensive and contains many item. Papers cited in the references 132 from all 174 are older then 5 years – these publications constitute over 75 % of all cited papers. I propose review literature to add new papers (from the last 5 years) to references. Author should include several modern papers of global research in this field.

-      More over minimum 120 cited papers out of 174 (over 68 %) are wrote by authors from Asia (most of them from China and some from Japan, India and others). Are the topics covered in this article are mostly carried out by research centers from Asia? I ask for a reliable verification of global research in this field. I propose to add some new (from the last 5 years) publications on this topic. Author should include several modern papers (also from Europe and America).

-      In the list of references I find 3 papers of the Authors of reviewed paper. Please indicate the differences in the studies presented in the cited article and their relation to the presented topic. Are these the first studies related to this subject for the Author?

-      Please prepare a literature review and body text of a paper according to the guidelines of the Coatings journal.

-      In the whole paper (text) you write for example 25.2% (line 142) or 150° (line 253) or 70°C (line 428) – you should write this value and symbol with a space as ’25.2 %’ or ’150 °’ or ’70 °C‘, respectively.

I have no major reservations about the quality of the paper, the research methodology presented and the interpretation of the results obtained. However, I would ask you to respond to my comments and answer them together with the correction of the indicated parts of the paper.

The paper are interesting and the manuscript can be accepted for publication in Coatings journal after MINOR corrections.

I find some mistakes for example:

  1. 1. Introduction chapter should be correct. Authors should include new information about topic of a paper. More information based on worldwide (global) study. The list of references should also be changed. Note the following suggestions related to the literature cited.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We have adjusted the references.

  1. Please describe all equipment and/or software used in the experiment – please insert model of equipment (manufacturer, city, country).

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We added the model, manufacturer and city of the equipment used. Unfortunately, some equipment models are not mentioned in the cited papers.

  1. References chapter is very comprehensive and contains many item. Papers cited in the references 132 from all 174 are older then 5 years – these publications constitute over 75 % of all cited papers. I propose review literature to add new papers (from the last 5 years) to references. Author should include several modern papers of global research in this field.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We deleted a large number of old documents and cited more new documents in recent 5 years, such as references 21,24,27,28,29,30,46,47,49, ,51,52,53,54,55,58,59,60,62,80,93,128.

I propose to add some new (from the last 5 years) publications on this topic. Author should include several modern papers (also from Europe and America).

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. In the process of literature review, we found that China has done more research in the field of composite insulators than European and American countries. We have added some European and American studies (such as references 44, 46, 48, 54, 57, 62, 92, 93, 108, 109, 110, 112, 113, 136) to show its global research.

  1. In the list of references I find 3 papers of the Authors of reviewed paper. Please indicate the differences in the studies presented in the cited article and their relation to the presented topic. Are these the first studies related to this subject for the Author?

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice.

The reference 62 discusses superhydrophobic coatings used for steel protection.

The reference 87discusses the micro-nanostructured polymer surfaces using injection molding.

The reference 104 discusses the micro hot embossing of thermoplastic polymers.

In our review, the application of superhydrophobic composite insulators is discussed for the first time, including the preparation of superhydrophobic composite insulators, the preparation of anti-icing composite insulators and the aging detection of composite insulators.

  1. Please prepare a literature review and body text of a paper according to the guidelines of the Coatings journal.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We revised the review according to the guidelines the Coatings journal.

  1. In the whole paper (text) you write for example 25.2% (line 142) or 150° (line 253) or 70°C (line 428) – you should write this value and symbol with a space as ’25.2 %’ or ’150 °’ or ’70 °C‘, respectively.

Response: Thanks for the reviewer's advice. We modified the problem that symbols and numbers need to be separated by spaces and marked red in the text.

Reviewer 3 Report

The review "Research Progress of Self-cleaning Anti-icing and Aging Test Technology of Composite Insulators" by Qiang He et al. is focused on different approaches for anti-icing and aging test of composite insulators. The work proposed is interesting even if I would provide some minor comments:

- Introduction page 2: I would ask the authors to add some line of comments for introducing the anti-icing properties. In the current form, there is no connection with the first part if the intro.

- Figure1: please rewrite the caption adding more information; also the difference between the figures of the panel is not very clear.

- In the introduction I would like to read some comments on the carbon footprint or more in general on the green advantages related to the control of the insulator's properties.

- section 3.1: please add some notes on the cost, dimension and complexity of the system described in case of big surfaces.

- section 3.4: line 392, please check the sentence and the corresponding reference

- acronyms should be defined the first time they appear. Check all along the text.

- In the conclusion, or also in the introduction, I find very interesting to add some line of comments on the use of the anti-icing properties also for airplanes
