Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

1. The Abstract overviews the analytical model of energy detector, while the limits and potential applications areas of the proposed model are not clearly indicated in this part. And the innovation and advantages of the proposed model are not indicated.

2. What is the improvement between the analytical model of energy detection designed in this paper and the existing energy detection model (e.g. Reference 10)?  Can you supplement the performance comparison analysis?

3. Does the performance limits of energy detection systems mentioned in Reference 11 also exist in the system designed in this paper, and how to alleviate this problem?

4. Most references are too early, and the article lacks the latest research results for comparison.

Reviewer 2 Report

In this study, the author proposed an analytical model of energy detector and obtained analytical closed-form expressions for the optimal threshold and the detection probabilities.

Analytical solution was compared to the corresponding numerical solution to examine the validity of the analytical approach.

This study is interesting and has a potential for the application of the performance evaluation of the transmitting-receiving systems with chaotic carrier. The reviewer recommends the paper accepted after the following comments are addressed.

Major comments:

(1)   Analytical expressions were obtained based on some assumptions, e.g., under assumption of equal probabilities of binary symbols ‘0’ and ‘1’. Thus, please state related assumptions in the abstract and conclusions. Please provide a more specific relation to replace B >> 1.

(2)   Lines 204-205, the author expanded Eqs. (6) and (7) to obtain a quadratic equation. Please provide details on this equation and its solution. (Note that if this procedure introduced an additional assumption, please state it.)

(3)   Eq. (10) was obtained under the assumption in (2). Please use Eq. (10) to compute the difference of w_1(X_T) and w_o(X_T), namely, checking the validity of Eq. (9)

Minor comments:

·      Abbreviations should be defined when they are first used (e.g., MIMO, AWGN, etc.)

·      Lines 173-176, please expand discussions for “phase chaos” and “amplitude chaos” for readers from different backgrounds.

Reviewer 3 Report

In this paper an analytical method for ultra-wideband communications based on an energy detector is presented. The method, classic, is well developed however some important point must be clarified.

- It is not the same font along the abstract.

- Abstract, it must be enhanced.

- Phrase in lines 19 to 21 must be enhanced.

- A brief introduction about chaotic communication is necessary in the introduction.

- The state-of-the-art is not updated (references are not recent)

- Information about chaotic pulses is not included at the beginning of this article (Section System Model)

- Why multipath effects are neglected in the system model, considering that is the real problem with the wireless communications in our days. Besides, this huge hypothesis simplifies the analytical model giving a more classical analysis.

- Based on the precedent criticism, maybe the results of the energy detector in practice will not have a good performance.

- Perfect synchronization is considered, but is this a realistic hypothesis for the model?

- Figures must be enhanced.

- In Figure 3, Yt or gamma? font is not clear. We can use color to enhance the figure.

- In Eq. 11, use Q(x), it is more common.
