Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

  1. The authors must briefly explain what is CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamic - discrete element method.
  2. The authors should state in the abstract what commercial is used for the simulation.
  3. What is the originality of the present paper? Please explicitly state.
  4. It is highly recommended to show the schematic figure of the centrifugal pump in section 1.1.
  5. In the Introduction, the authors only mention the relevant CFD investigation. Please add more references related to the experimental investigation. Why do the authors focus on the CFD investigation? It must be stated clearly.
  6. Line 37 "The hub and cover wall are subjected to small...." The schematic figure will help readers to understand more about the hub, cover, etc.
  7. Line 126 "Fluent software" which version do the authors use?
  8. Line 130 "EDEM software" which version do the authors use?
  9. Do the author need another software for coupling between Fluent and EDEM/ If yes, please state it.
  10. Figure 1, please revise the figure by using a standard block diagram.
  11. Figure 5, experience --> experiment. Check other figures as well.
  12. The authors must include the experimental uncertainty. For instance, flow meter. What is the flow meter type? What is the accuracy?
  13. Please state the temperature condition in the experiment. There is any effect from the temperature?
  14. The experimental section is too short. The authors must elaborate more on the experimental section. It is really important for others to confirm the reliability of the present investigation.
  15. Figure 7, change the legend to kPa

Reviewer 2 Report

The subject is relevant to the area of this journal, and the study is properly justified and sound. However, it hasn't reached the standard of publication. Some suggestions are listed below for considering in revised copy:

1) The objective, methodology, and results should be better described, discussed and justified.

2) The current literature review is not sufficient. For example, please mention (give) following more current study related to rotational flows in the sections of Introduction, and References List for completeness of your study and the references:

- Investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop in a concentric heat exchanger with snail entrance, Applied Thermal Engineering, 22(3), 321-332 (2002).

3) The results should be expanded significantly and quantitatively.

4) I strongly suggest that authors shall carry out more studies to compare the results from this paper to that from other similar studies.
