Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear author,

In this paper, the author presented the waveform control based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in high-power region with some simulation and actual experiment. The Stokes light intensity has been calculated to be 36.92 MW/cm2. I recommend that you compare the value with that in other references. Please check some comment emmbeted into an attapched file.

Dear Reviewer,

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to your warm work and thank you for this great opportunity for us to improve the manuscript " Generation of a High-Intensity Temporal Step Waveform Based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, ID: photonics-1675841".

We have carefully considered the comments from you, which help us to improve the manuscript substantially. Each suggested revision and comment brought forward by the reviewers was accurately incorporated and considered. We revised the content of the manuscript according to the valuable suggestions from you. And a response letter has been uploaded which provided a point-to-point response to your comments. And each revised content is highlighted in blue.

The “Theoretical Simulation” section has been majorly revised. And we rephrased all the unclear description and figures. The changes in the revised manuscript are highlighted in red-line, which shows in the revised manuscript of red-lined version.

Once again, thank you very much for your considerations of our manuscript.

Wish you all the best!

Reviewer 2 Report

This manuscript proposed a method to generate high-intensity temporal step waveforms based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering. Numerical simulation was implemented to optimize the parameters. Based on the simulation, an experiment was carried out to demonstrate the idea. The manuscript is well written and easily understood. I think it can be considered for publication in MDPI Photonics after the following mandatory revisions have been made.

  • The innovation of this manuscript, compared with the previous works (Especially the authors’ previous work Ref. [9]), should be clearly clarified in the Introduction part.
  • The fundamental operation principle of the temporal step waveform generation should be given in detail in a separate part like “Operation principle”. Especially, the mathematical model used to achieve simulation should be given.
  • In Fig. 4, a temporal step waveform is generated under a phonon lifetime of 0.1 ns, a Brillouin gain coefficient of 0.2 cm/GW and an interaction length of 15 cm. However, the simulation results in Fig. 2 indicate that the optimized parameters for generating a temporal step waveform are 0.2 ns (phonon lifetime), 0.2 cm/GW (Brillouin gain coefficient) and 15 cm (interaction length). Fig. 2(a) also indicates that a temporal step waveform cannot be generated under a phonon lifetime of 0.1 ns. The authors must give an explanation about the parameter deviation.
  • The longitudinal coordinates are missing in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4(b). In addition, it is better to present the absolute intensity value instead of the relative intensity value in Fig. 1, Fig. 2 and Fig. 4.
  • The definition of the inflection point should be clarified.
  • Some misleading expressions should be noticed. For example, “0.2 cm/GW (blue line)” in the Line 111 and “15 cm (pink line)” in the Line 121 are inconsistent with the figures.
  • “are shown in Fig. 2” in line 72 on page 2 should be “are shown in Fig. 1”.
