Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article “Influence of Dietary Algae Meal on Lipid Oxidation and Volatile Profile of Meat from Lambs with Competent Reticular Groove Reflex” is well written. However, there are small issues that should be corrected.

General comments

I suggest reviewing the English. There are some grammatical errors and typos.

Abstract

Line 19: Which marine algae? Please cite.

Line 22: with.

Line 25-26: Information unnecessary for the Abstract section.

Introduction

Line 46: "Powerful". I suggest using another term.

Line 48: Name the species of marine microalgae please. There are thousands of species.

Material and Methods

Line 68: Elsewhere or in previous works?

Results and Discussion

The results and discussion section is well written but I suggest separating it into more paragraphs. There is a lot of information and sometimes it gets confusing.

Line 148: Between or among?

Line 152:  were well below?

Line 158: Papers or articles?

Line 197-200: Confused sentence. I suggest rewriting.

Conclusion

Line 307-311: Sentences not suitable for the Conclusion section. I suggest removing or rewriting.

This paper investigate the effects of marine algae supplementation on volatile compounds of cooked lamb meat. The research is quite meaningful, but it needs further improvement.

Line 20 Change the sentence “Animals were divided into …” to “(lambs number) lambs with …age were divided into …”

Line 21 The abbreviation of “NOALG” should be according to the expression of “lambs fed a conventional diet”.

Line 73-74 Does the control group feed milk replacer or not?

Line 80-81 Though feeding milk replacer can maintain the competency of the RGR, part of the milk replacer will pass the rumen. Please evaluate the effect of this phenomenon on you results.

Line 83-89 Key information of slaughter performance should supplemented or cited in this manuscript, such as pre-slaughter weight, carcass weight.

PUFA data is very important in evaluate the oxidation capacity of meat, so the results of PUFA content should be contained in the present manuscript.

Line 302 Marine algae meal supplementation contribute to the aromatic profile of lamb meat, but increased the lipid oxidation which may lead to shorter shelf life. You need discuss it.

Dear authors,

in my mind a poor introduction (and mainly a lacking paragraph about conclusions), overshadow some good cues, e.g. Tukey test for statistical analysis and overall novelty.

Introduction, lines 34-63.

This paragraph must be improved as indicated with following (materials and methods) suggestions.

Introduction, line 56.

The most biologically relevant omega-3 FA. This sentence is almost redundant, I would take it off.

Materials and methods, statistical analysis, line 67.

Please, can you put the file about authorization? Thanks

Materials and methods, statistical analysis, lines 86-87.

“without disrupting the cold chain”. I suggest respecting the cold chain.

Materials and methods, statistical analysis, lines 139-140.

Please indicate the formulas (ANOVA and Tukey).

“when the model was significant differences between means were assessed by Tukey’s test”. Good, I agree the Tukey validation but please, improve this sentence. Thanks.

Materials and methods, statistical analysis, line 145.

Please, check the bibliographic source (18). Although you correctly cited these authors, in my mind this reference is rather inconsistent with statistical validation. I suggest to put Gómez-Cortés et al. (2018) in the introduction. Introduction should be larger and better argued as paragraph, you can improve with other sources. Several researchers investigated also in lamb dietary supplementation: M.A. Colonna, F. Giannico, A. Coluccia, G. Di Bello, G. Vonghia, A. Caputi Jambrenghi. Dietary supplementation with extruded linseed and linseed oil in lamb feeding: productive performances and meat quality traits, in Progress in Nutrition Vol. 13, n. 2, 111-124, 2011.

Materials and methods, statistical analysis, lines 157-158.

“…results from previously published papers suggest that…”, please improve the sentence.

Results and discussion, lines 226-227.

“The 1-penten-3-ol derives from the oxidation of the omega-3 terminal end of EPA and DHA.” Although your sentence includes the research of some authors, I would suggest improving it in grammar.

Results and discussion, line 234.

After this paragraph, with the aim to enrich the discussion, I suggest to indicate researches focused on the Schizochytrium spp. administration, adopted in dairy cattle.

Results and discussion, line 248-249.

“…phytol in beef meat has been negatively related to grain feeding in drylot after grazing on pasture (with bibliography)”. In my mind this sentence should be validated with larger bibliography. Thanks.

Yours Sincereley

I didn't find any changes in the revised manuscript about the question "PUFA data is very important in evaluate the oxidation capacity of meat, so the results of PUFA content should be contained in the present manuscript." I pointed out last time.
