Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Revision of jcs-1870676

This work reports the fabrication of sandwich composites based on aluminum foam core between aluminium bar skins wrapped into CFRP. This sandwich presented better mechanical performance when compared to the conventional ones. The work is scientifically relevant and presents an interesting approach to sandwich composites for the automotive market. However, in my opinion, the paper needs to be improved to be able to publish on Journal of Composites Science. In this sense, I recommend Accept after minor revision.

Author Response

We rewritten parts and up dated the wordings and tables plus rewritten the conclusions too.

Reviewer 2 Report

A manuscript titled “Strength and deformation characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced composite wrapped aluminium foam beams” has been presented. The deformations and failure of the structures results indicate that application of aluminium face sheets with aluminium foam aids to prevent the delamination of the outer layers of carbon fibre reinforced polymers. It is noted that when carbon fibre reinforced polymers wrapped around aluminium foam sandwich structure, it enhances the structural performance without significant weight gain.

Following comment will be helpful to improve the manuscript.

Table 3 appears to be an image, please use same formatting for Table 3, as used in Table 1 and 2.

Units needs to be checked carefully. e.g. Line199: 150x22x15mm, either use 150mm x 22mm x 15mm or 150 x 22 x 15 mm^3.

Figures containing graphs are not of very good quality and needs to be improved and have consistency. Figure 5, 8, 10, 13, 16, 17. Use better readable font size for axis information and legends.

Remove figure border for figure 13.

Overall, the work is useful and is of interest for the readers.

Author Response

We have redone the figs and changed some of the wording as suggested to try and make it clearer for the reader

Reviewer 3 Report

The presents detailed mechanical characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced composite wrapped aluminium foam beams. However, the following points should be considered.

English writing needs further improvement. Some suggestions are marked in the attached manuscript. See the comments in the pdf file. Please provide the missing keywords. At the end of Introduction, please state the novelty of the work with some research gaps. Only Surname et al. should be provided for referencing within the text Make sure you have copyright permission for external figures Sections are not organized very well. 2. Materials and method and 3. Experimental results and discussion. It is bit confusing in the experimental section what the authors have done and what taken from literature. Please make this very clear. Further discussions are required on the comparison between experimental and simulation results. Practical significance of this study also needs to be discussed. Conclusion sounds more like discussions. Focus on the key points found from the results and other general analysis you can move into relevant results and discussions section.
