The authors reviewed “Optimal Fuel Consumption Modelling, Simulation and Analysis for Hybrid Electric Vehicle” while citing the latest research articles.

The following recommendations can further improve the article.

Abstract:

  • What model did the authors use in this study?

Yes. Thank you. The sentence is not clear and misunderstanding. I have added the following for s clearer sentence:

A comprehensive HEV model is built and this model is …

  • It seems like the authors used the Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Model in Simulink. If this is correct, then clearly mention this in the abstract

Yes. Thank you. I have changed and made the abstract clearer.

  • I recommend removing the “regression equations” from the keywords.

Yes. Thank you. I have deleted the keywords “regression equations”

Introduction:

  • The introduction can improve by talking about some features of HEVs e.g., regenerative braking system.

Actually, the regenerative braking system is complicated, expensive and generally less effective. It saves about only less 15% of energy from braking and it lengthens the battery life for only less 3%. Therefore, in our model, we did not include this system into our simulation. It is the initial research and we will make a full model in the next research phase and the next paper. Thank you.

  • The authors claimed “HEVs help to save fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emission by less than 50% than the conventional vehicles using only the internal combustion engines (ICEs)” Reference is required for this sentence.

It is the general knowledge of HEV for students when they learn HEV. It is mentioned on Wiki and all text books of HEV. Please check the below information:

As HEVs use less gasoline than conventional vehicles, they typically reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 30-50%

Full hybrid potential fuel economy benefit – [30-80%]

Thank you

  • Also, reference is required for this sentence “In the future, electric vehicles (EVs) may replace the ICEs. But at the moment, EVs still have serious problems of high costs, limited ranges and long-time charging

It is a clear sentence and in the next few years, EU is investing more than 10 billion euros on alternative vehicle fuel other than electricity. We are involving in some project to produce liquified hydrogen and recycled bio-fuel. The above sentence is my owned statement and the below image is one of our projects in EU. Thank you.

  • “HEVs production will reach 100 million in 2050”. Reference is required for this sentence.

It is projection that more than 100 million of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will be produced in 2050. It is also my owned statement and projection. It doesn’t need citation.

  • “The update internet sources are from [28] to [35]”. What does this mean?

Yes, sorry. I have changed the sentence:

The update internet sources for the different HEVs used in the internet link references are from reference [28] to [35].

HEVs Powertrain Modelling

  • Hard to understand the first paragraph need to rephrase

Yes. Thank you. I have added:

HEVs usually have two power sources, a combustion engine and an electrical motor with big battery to run the vehicles…

  • Check all the spelling mistakes e.g., paragraph 2 says “the main battery Li-in with capacity of 6 Ah;” It should be the main battery Li-ion with a capacity of 6 Ah;” also grammatical check is required.

Yes. Thank you. Corrected and checked grammar

the main battery Li-ion with a capacity of 6 Ah…

Fuel Economy Modelling and Regressions

  • Hard to understand “Table 3. Fuel consumption in litter”. This needs to improve

Yes, I have checked. Thank you

Simulations of different HEVs on different tire sizes on 100 seconds over the driving cycle FEP75 for fuel consumption in litter.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript reviews the research progress of fuel comsumption modelling method and presents some simulation tools. The general content is adequate but the topic is kind of outdated. There are some suggestions for authors.

1. The formation of article should be checked, where the type and colour are different in abstact and others.

2. In introduction, the author states "this paper attempts to discover what elements are affecting the fuel consumption and which is the best HEV sizes and tires to achieve the best fuel consumption.". In my opinion, the result may be a methodology for characteristicing te influence of fuel comsumption. But from the presentation of the article, there is no obvious theory for analyzing, which may be improved as the innovation of the article.

3. More references should be referred, owing to that there are amounts of articles associating with HEV while only 35 are referred. Moreover, the formation of reference should be checked.

Yes. I have checked and corrected. Thank you.

In this paper, a comprehensive HEV model is built in Simulink. This model is used to run different HEV models with different parameters, weights and tires in references from [28] to [35]. Then, we use regression models to find out the lowest fuel consumption curve based on the data of different model simulations. The best model is identified. Thank you.

This paper is not a reviewing paper and we have tried to update 35 latest references relating to our study. The size of our paper is also 22 pages. In the next study, we will make the model more complicated with braking re-generation and other updated electronic applications. We will find and include more updated research references. Thank you.
