Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

this is an interesting work about easy-to-build hardware and software platform. This approach is not novel and there are some important questions that must be solved to be clear about the contribution:

1. the acrylic box used has roles in the bottom? How water will percolate if not?

2. What kind of soil was used in the experiment? It is critical to understand the effectiveness of the readings.

3. the soil deep was enough for the experimental crop to develop properly?

4. Fig 17 has no scale or axis. I do not know what I'm looking at

5. Paper does not show soil moisture dynamics. that's important. There is no discussion about that matter.

6. weather conditions to understand the model performance necessary. there is only temperature readings (not clear the performance of the other components). For example, the following paper describes the environmental conditions compared to the sensors (among others): https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/8239290/

Dear Authors,

this is an interesting work about easy-to-build hardware and software platform. This approach is not novel and there are some important questions that must be solved to be clear about the contribution:

  1. the acrylic box used has roles in the bottom? How will water percolate if not?

A: We did make drainage holes. We forgot to add the picture before and have added the picture now.

  1. What kind of soil was used in the experiment? It is critical to understand the effectiveness of the readings.

A: We used all-purpose potting soil. Details have been added to the revised manuscript.

  2. the soil deep was enough for the experimental crop to develop properly?

A: Yes. The soil is 6.280 inches deep. Details have been added to the revised manuscript.

  1. Fig 17 has no scale or axis. I do not know what I'm looking at?

A: It was meant to show how many days of the week the plants receive water. It has been replaced with soil moisture reading graph.

  1. Paper does not show soil moisture dynamics. that's important. There is no discussion about that matter.

        A: It has been added.

  1. weather conditions to understand the model performance necessary. there is only temperature readings (not clear the performance of the other components). The paper entitled " IoT - enabled Smart Drip Irrigation System using ESP32 " suggest a implementation of IoT  solution that can be used in agricultural system. The proposal is beneficial for controlling and managing the irrigation. Hence, it helps to save water then to develop a sustainable agriculture. However, for enhancing the paper quality, we suggest some modification:

1- It seems that the related work have not discussed. We suggest to add a section where authors discuss some recent related works

2- I think that the first sentence of the section two is not sufficient to give an overview of the designed system. (please extend this sentence to a short paragraph)

3- I think that two sensors (soil moisture and temperature) are not sufficient to determine whether the plant need water or not (You can add other sensors like wind speed, air humidity..)

4- Write the full name of words before using their abbreviations

5- Describe briefly the obtained results of your propose in the last paragraph of introduction

6- Describe in details How your proposal is different with other related works.

7- Add more references especially the works published in 2022 and 2023

8- The conclusion is too length

However, for enhancing the paper quality, we suggest some modification:

1- It seems that the related work have not discussed. We suggest to add a section where authors discuss some recent related works

A: A dedicated section has been added for related works and our previous explanation has been expanded.

2- I think that the first sentence of the section two is not sufficient to give an overview of the designed system. (please extend this sentence to a short paragraph)

A: It has been extended.

3- I think that two sensors (soil moisture and temperature) are not sufficient to determine whether the plant need water or not (You can add other sensors like wind speed, air humidity..)

A: We have added an air humidity sensor. More sensors will be added with time.

4- Write the full name of words before using their abbreviations

A: Abbreviation related errors have been corrected. Additionally, the MDPI abbreviations section has been added before references.

5- Describe briefly the obtained results of your propose in the last paragraph of introduction

A: It has been added to the second last paragraph of the introduction, as the last paragraph describes the organization of the article.

6- Describe in details How your proposal is different with other related works.

A: It has been moved from the introduction to the related works section. More details have been added.

7- Add more references especially the works published in 2022 and 202

A: It has been done.

8- The conclusion is too length

A: It has been shortened.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

Thank you for sending a new version of the material. The research is ok and it is interesting to know the weather conditions and how it affects the irrigation decisions. I suggest in coming research to advance more in sensing and not focusing on ESP32 platform.
