Skin Health Promoting Effects of Natural Polysaccharides and Their Potential Application in the Cosmetic Industry
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
In this manuscript, the Authors reviewed the various benefits and some problems of natural polysaccharides from new resources for skin health. The Authors stated that the application of natural polysaccharides as ingredients in skincare products could provide safer and better functional benefits than a number of synthetic ingredients. However, the difficulty in purification, biosafety issue, the lack of in-depth exploration of their underlying mechanisms, and the immature regulations are the major hindrances to the large-scale commercial application of natural polysaccharides. The Authors believe, that in the future, after carefully addressing these issues, these polysaccharides can be translated into commercial skincare products with therapeutic and preventive properties.
From my point of view, the manuscript is interesting and will attract the interest of many scientists working with such systems. However, the manuscript requires careful editing as there are some minor typos and other flaws. Moreover, moderate editing of English language and style is required.

Reviewer 3 Report
In general, this paper is like a list of references, lacking comparison and summary.
Section 2 and section 3 should write together.
Some contents of Section 2 should be written in Introduction.
Challenges and prospects: please add the structure-activity relationship.

Comment: In general, this paper is like a list of references, lacking comparison and summary.
Response: Thanks for reviewers’ time efforts and valuable comments. We have rephased the whole manuscript and added certain comparison and summary.
Comment: Section 2 and section 3 should write together.
Response: thanks for your valuable comment. Section 2 aims to introduce the different possible skincare functions provided by polysaccharides, while Section 3 classifies the different functional polysaccharides discovered in recent years from the source. Thus, we separated Section 2 and 3 and tried to make a clearer structure for audiences to read.
Comment: Some contents of Section 2 should be written in Introduction.
Response: thanks for your valuable suggestion, we added some contents from Section 2 into the Introduction part, so that audiences can have a better understanding in the Introduction part, and have a review in the Section 2.
Comment: Challenges and prospects: please add the structure-activity relationship.
Response: done.
Reviewer 4 Report
The review article authored by Yao and Xu describes the application of natural polysaccharides and their sources in the cosmetic industry. The manuscript itself is a well written short piece that will be interesting for a wider audience. In my opinion, it is worth publishing in Polysaccharides, after minor corrections:
1) Fig. 1.: From my perspective, UV light increases ROS, proinflammatory cytokines, MMPs, inflammation and skin photoaging, while decreasing collagen and elastin synthesis. However, the application of polysaccharides is not as clear: Did you want to show that the polysaccharides inhibit UV absorption through skin or decrease the ROS concentration limiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and MMPs?
I think the authors could try to find a more convenient and visually appealing form of this scheme.
2) Italics is missing in ganoderma lucidum (p. 4, line 175).
