The Public Health Approach to Oral Health: A Literature Review

Raman Bedi is Professor of Transcultural Oral Health at King’s College London and was the Chief Dental Officer of England from 2002 to 2005. Dr. Raman was the head of dental public health at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College of London, and Director of the National Centre for Transcultural Oral Health from 1996–2002. From 1998–2008 he was the director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre at the Eastman Dental Institute. Currently, he is an Emeritus Professor at King’s College London. He holds several international honorary chairs, including an “Extraordinary Professorship” in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa and the University of Pennsylvania. He was the founding chair of the World Federation of Public Health Associations’ oral health working group (2012–2021), raising the importance of oral health issues affecting global public health. He was a WHO consultant and asked to review dental services in Oman. He was President of the British Society for Disability and Oral Health (2002), President of the Education Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) (2002–2004) and chair of the IADR Regional Development Programme Committee (2002–2004).

Dr Marta Lomazzi is the Executive Manager of the World Federation of Public Health Associations. A medical biotechnologist by training, Dr Lomazzi has a PhD in Neuroscience and post-graduate trainings in Health and Diplomacy and Negotiations. An accomplished and creative manager and public health professional, she has over 15 years of experience in operational management, strategic planning and relations building in an international environment. She is the focal point between WFPHA and the WHO and other international organizations. Passionate about public health and equity, she is one of the founding members of the WFPHA International Immunization Policy Taskforce. Beyond her activities at WFPHA, she is a Privet-Dozent at the University of Geneva and co-editor of the Journal of Public Health Federation’s Pages.
