Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

For centuries, countries have traded in agri-food products to supplement and complement their domestic production and meet consumers’ needs. Shifts in consumption patterns have affected the emergence of global markets and increased the importance of agri-food trade to individual economies. In many countries, agri-food products play a vital role in foreign trade, positively contributing to the current account balance and boosting economic growth. The role of foreign trade in ensuring food security is also undeniable. At the same time, in the 21st century, foreign trade in agri-food products has experienced an increasing number of preferential trade agreements, an extended use of non-tariff barriers to trade, and market disruptions caused by various types of crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war. All of these issues affect trade dynamics and structures, while new key players in international agri-food markets arise. In this context, original research papers and review articles that address the current state and further global trade developments in the agri-food sector are welcome. Key research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Agri-food trade structures and dynamics in bilateral relations and on a global scale;
  • International competitiveness of agri-food sectors and agribusiness enterprises at the regional and world levels;
  • Importance of the World Trade Organization and preferential trade agreements in the liberalization of international trade in agri-food products;
  • Changing nature of market protection in agri-food trade: from tariffs to non-tariff barriers to trade;
  • Trade-related effects of preferential trade agreements for agri-food sectors in signatories countries and third countries;
  • Role of agri-food trade in ensuring food security in the world;
  • Agri-food supply chains resilience: drivers, strategies, methodological framework;
  • Foreign direct investments as a driver of agri-food trade development;
  • Agri-food trade patterns under time of crisis: economic crises, animal diseases outbreaks, COVID-19 pandemic, armed conflicts;
  • Agri-food trade developments in the context of environmental challenges and climate change;
  • Price transmission in international agricultural markets;
  • Methodology developments in international trade analyses.
