Special Issue Information
Dear colleagues,
This Special Issue of Animals aims to provide open-access availability for clinicians and investigators to the latest information available regarding the intensive and critical care of sick equine neonates. Equine neonatology is of special interest to many of our most talented veterinarians, and we will tap into their expertise and expanded knowledge base to publish review articles with both broad and narrow scope, original hypothesis-driven research, retrospective studies of interest and case series that introduce new topics or problems. The goal of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for scientists and clinical researchers to share recent advances in understanding equine newborn and neonatal disorders.
Topics for this call for papers include but are not restricted to:
- The epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of equine newborn/neonatal sepsis and neonatal encephalopathy, including endocrine transitions;
- Causes of fetal/newborn problems associated with prematurity;
- Renal transition from fetus to newborn to neonate;
- Cardio-respiratory transition from fetus to newborn to neonate;
- Gastrointestinal function in health and disease, including studies of ‘gut closure’ and development of the GI microbiome.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
