Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This volume of approximately 18 chapters brings together a collection of East Asian voices—in collaboration with our allies—as narrators of our own racialized experiences in music. Because the volume seeks to collate our voices in a creative act of resistance against racism in music, it features an innovative tone that is both academic as well as personal/reflective, thus deliberately disrupting conventional linguistic norms. Our authors employ a range of new methods, including counter-storytelling and collaborative autoethnography. Our aim is to stand in solidarity with activism that more broadly targets inequalities in the arts.

This volume emerges from the conference ‘Racialised Performance in Western Classical Music’ in July 2022, hosted by the Open University and Royal Holloway, University of London, sparking new discourses of East-Asian(-plus) perspectives in Western Classical Music practice and a strong sense of community, collectivity, and inclusion among scholars based in Asia, Europe, and the USA.

The volume will be co-edited by Dr. Maiko Kawabata (Open University and Royal College of Music) and Dr. Ken Ueno (University of California, Berkeley).
