Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Microclimatic conditions and air quality are two of the factors characterizing the atmosphere in an urban environment. As an ever-increasing percentage of the world's population lives in urban areas, these are widely recognized as two of the major threats affecting modern society. High levels of air pollution are responsible for a high number of premature deaths and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, among other morbidities, as well as for significant impacts on the built environment, cultural heritage, economy, and ecosystems.
To fully understand the connection between micrometeorology and air pollution, observations and measurements play key roles. They can provide information about the space–time variability of pollutants and meteorological factors, allowing for high spatial-temporal resolution studies by evaluating, for example, the influence of buildings’ arrangement, trees, and green areas. Furthermore, medium- and long-term analyses of observations collected in urban environments can help to understand the evolution of pollution levels, providing indications to stakeholders and government bodies regarding the optimal design, implementation, and effectiveness of policies to reduce air pollution and improve urban comfort levels.
The focus of this Special Issue is on cutting-edge research contributions on the development of innovative techniques for experimental microclimatic and chemical monitoring, development of low-cost sensors for real-time or near-real-time atmospheric monitoring, measurement campaigns, and data operation algorithms that allow personal air pollution exposure determination. In particular, studies concerning the interconnection between microclimatic variables and aerosols and/or gaseous atmospheric are ideal contributions for this Special Issue, as well as submissions concerning multidisciplinary research and future challenges. Furthermore, numerical studies using observations for the validation of physicochemical numerical outputs are welcome.
