Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

By simulating human skeletal, joint, and muscular structures, along with their driving mechanisms, musculoskeletal robots demonstrate superior compliance, dexterity, robustness, and safety compared to traditional serial rigid robots. This makes them a promising avenue for next-generation robotics, with the potential to significantly advance the development of humanoid robots and related technologies.

This Special Issue primarily focuses on four key areas: artificial muscle actuators, structural design, muscle control, and decision making in musculoskeletal robots. First, developing artificial muscle actuators that achieve an optimal balance between a high power density and precise control is essential. Additionally, designing human-like skeleton and joints and arranging the muscles to create lightweight, agile, and compliant musculoskeletal robots with a high load-to-weight ratio both present significant challenges and opportunities. Achieving the effective control of muscles characterized by high redundancy, strong coupling, and substantial non-linearity is another complex problem. Furthermore, leveraging musculoskeletal robots to facilitate safe and efficient human–robot collaboration is of great importance. Addressing the above research areas holds the promise of enhancing musculoskeletal robots’ overall performance and advancing their broader application.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Biomimetics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
