Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The eye is one of the most complex organs, wherein each layer and sub-layer of cells have unique specialized functions. This Special Issue focuses on recent discoveries from biomarker analyses, cell biology, and novel therapeutic strategies that advance our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of various ocular conditions. Due to advancements in technologies such as immune factor analysis, proteomics, etc., scientific investigations have started to deliver results directly from patient-derived samples, putting the spotlight on critical factors that may be involved in driving the disease in patient eyes. The explosion of knowledge in intracellular signalling, altered immunophenotypes, and cell-to-cell interactions with consequent alterations in signal transduction has helped to expand the field of ophthalmology in terms of the diagnosis of disease, as well as new methods of monitoring disease progression and identifying therapeutic targets. As we understand more about the dysregulated factors in patients, we also need to extend our understanding of the exact roles of these molecular players in the pathology of ocular diseases using various in vitro and in vivo or ex vivo models. We invite articles from laboratories engaged in such discovery research or in-depth disease modeling studies to contribute to this Special Issue.

The areas of study covered under this Special Issue will include:

  • Studies across all layers of the eye (the cornea, retina, optic neuron, lens, sclera, and other parts of the eye);
  • Biomarker discovery in human patients (such studies must have statistical analyses performed in depth, preferably with clinical correlations and additional validation where necessary);
  • Disease model studies that involve cell signalling aspects with novel pathways, genes, etc., with direct relevance to ocular diseases;
  • Regenerative medicine approaches (including stem cell or gene therapy) in the context of ocular disease pathological pathways.

Areas not included:

  • Biomarker studies exclusively in relation to cell lines or animal models;
  • Technology papers for eye applications;
  • Clinical imaging alone or imaging only based markers in eye diseases;
  • Meta analyses.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
