Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a subpopulation of cancer cells characterized by the capacity for self-renewal, differentiation, and tumor initiation. CSCs play a crucial role in cancer heterogeneity, development, progression, invasiveness, and resistance to conventional therapies. Indeed, they are able to survive treatments, thus contributing to disease relapse, metastasis, and poor clinical outcomes in many different cancers. In particular, growing evidence has shown that CSCs are involved in promoting a more aggressive phenotype of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a heterogeneous subtype of breast cancer that lacks targeted therapeutic options and is associated with high rates of recurrence and metastasis. Deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the behavior of CSCs and targeting them could be critical to developing more effective and durable therapeutic strategies for the management of TNBC. This Special Issue aims to present recent insights into the biology of CSCs in addition to their function and regulation in TNBC. Topics of interest include the identification of markers of CSCs, the signaling pathways involved, the tumor microenvironment, immune evasion, epigenetic and metabolic regulation, and therapeutic approaches targeting CSCs. This Special Issue therefore aims to shed light on the critical role of CSCs in TNBC and promote the development of CSC-focused interventions to improve patient outcomes. Both original research articles and comprehensive reviews are invited.
