Surface Engineering and Materials for Corrosion Protection
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
It is our pleasure to invite you to be a part of this Special Issue entitled “Surface Engineering and Materials for Corrosion Protection”, which seeks to reflect the latest advances in the development of materials and surface treatments for metal corrosion protection. Corrosion remains a critical challenge in multiple industrial sectors, causing economic losses, compromising structural integrity, and generating environmental concerns. Research in this area continues to be motivated by the search for technologies, procedures, and techniques that are efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly.
The focus of recent research has been on novel coatings, nanostructured systems, ecological inhibitors, and smart or self-repairing surfaces, which have opened up new opportunities for durable and sustainable protection. The objective of this Special Issue is to gather high-quality contributions that highlight recent developments in this field, which provides a platform for both fundamental studies and practical applications related to the design, manufacture, and characterization of advanced materials and treatments for corrosion control.
This Special Issue aims to attract relevant articles related to all areas of coatings studies. Potential topics include the following:
- Metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and hybrid protective coatings.
- Nanostructured and multifunctional coatings.
- Environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors.
- Green and sustainable alternatives to conventional inhibitors.
- Plasma or laser surface treatment.
- Smart and self-healing coatings with controlled release of inhibitors.
We invite you to submit a manuscript to this Special Issue. We welcome the submission of full papers, communications, and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
