Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

To protect surfaces in tribological contacts, thin coatings such as diamond-like carbon (DLC) and molybdenum are commonly applied. Current research in dry lubrication focuses on coatings based on DLC, Mo, MoOx, MoS2, PTFE, graphite, and graphene platelets. Additionally, thin films derived from anti-wear and extreme pressure additives in oils are crucial for achieving optimal operational conditions in oil- and grease-lubricated tribological contacts. This topic collection aims to explore recent advances in dry lubricants, coatings for lubricated tribological contacts, and the tribofilms formed on coatings and contacting surfaces.

In the context of green energy, open questions remain about how bio-based oils interact with substrates and how these interactions are influenced by additives. The formed boundary layers play a crucial role and should be explored in detail.

Emerging research topics include the effects of tribocharging and electrical currents in tribological contacts. Coatings and thin tribofilms serve as protective barriers in these scenarios, but this area remains underexplored.

In recent years, advanced analytical techniques such as nanoindentation, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) have been employed to gain deeper insights into protective coatings and films formed due to additives. These techniques provide a holistic view of function, wear rate, and influence on operational conditions, enhancing our understanding and capabilities in this field.
