Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wood, as a natural and versatile material, has been utilized in construction and various industries for centuries. However, its inherent flammability and susceptibility to environmental degradation pose significant challenges. Flame retardants are chemical additives designed to inhibit or slow down the combustion process of materials, thereby reducing the spread of fire and limiting fire-related damage. The use of fire retardants in wood and wood-based composite protection is particularly important in industries where fire safety is paramount, such as construction, transportation, and furniture manufacturing.

In recent years, advancements in fire retardant and wood protection coatings have opened up new avenues for enhancing safety and durability across various industries. From architectural construction to furniture manufacturing, the demand for innovative solutions that mitigate fire hazards and preserve wood integrity has intensified. These developments not only improve the performance and longevity of wood products but also advance sustainable practices. By incorporating bio-based solutions and environmentally friendly materials, these innovative coatings contribute to a reduced ecological footprint and support the transition towards more sustainable construction and manufacturing processes.

This Special Issue aims to provide insight into the advancement of wood and wood-based products, with a specific focus on improving fire safety, multifunctional coating for wood protection, and sustainability in various applications towards the use bio-based chemicals.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • advanced fire-retardant additives;
  • fire-retardant performance;
  • multifunctional coatings;
  • sustainable coating development;
  • emerging applications;
  • commercialization challenges.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
